96 gti cavitating, I think ??

Our 96 GTI just started this. From a dead stop when given full throttle, it sounds like a machine gun and goes very slow. If you back off the throttle and slowly increase it will make a little noise and then take off. Full speed seems unaffected. I looked in the garte and there is nothing on the impeller or shaft. My questions are:

What is causing this?

Can I wait awhile to get it fixed, if I accelerate slowly can I ride for a while until the repair shop backlog clears up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like its time to tear the pump off and replace the wear ring.
