I have a 96 GSX, I started it up and it ran good for about 15 minutes. I had a fully charged battery in it, but after about 15 minutes of riding it totally stopped, and it wouldn't start. After about a half hour I got it to start up, but wouldn't reach over 2100 RPM's, as I was limping back to the docks, I got hit by some waves and it shook the PWC enough and I was able to reach RPM's in the 4000 range, but then it went back to going between 2100 and 1900 RPM's. I looked inside the engine compartment, I found a round rubber piece but I have no idea where it came from, I also still have the gray fuel lines in it as well. Any suggestions as what to do from here????

Also no beeps at start up, and even with a fully charged battery it shows a warning the the 12volt is low???

Gray Fuel Lines

On a 96 you are definately going to have to replace the fuel lines, clean or replace the main filter, carb. filters, and replace the fuel selector valve. I would start there.

Changed Fuel Lines

Alright, I have changed the fuel lines and am going to have a look at the filters. Can I get these filters at an auto parts store, or am I going to have to search out a marine shop? I have pulled the small carb filters out once already and they didn't look too bad, but that was two years ago. I am not certain where the fuel selector filter is at, any help with that.

Also, how about the 12 Volt Low warning with a fully charged battery in the ski. Any advise for that issue???

Thanks for the advice so far.

fuel issuu

I have a 98 GSX ltd and just went through the entire fuel system due to not being able to accelerate above half throttle. The green goop was everywhere and my carb screen on the slave carb was loaded heavily. I am a newbie but know that the pulse system is heavily dependent on a tight fuel system (good clamping and fit) on everything. The negative pressure relief chack valve for the vent system for the tank are critical. Make sure they are working correctly. The largest part of my fuel issue besides debris in the screen was a clogged fuel selector valve. If you haven't already pull the selector valve and inspect/clean thoroughly.

I also have a horn going off while im on the water intermittently that drives me crazy. Other than that the ski is running great after the fuel delivery system overhaul. Let me know what you find.

Slave Carb??

I only pulled out one small filter on the one carb, is there another filter on the second carb? I didn't see one in the repair manual. I only cleaned out the filter under the front (the main filter) and then the one real small one in the carb on the right side. Is there more???

carb filters

Loustra is correct. If its like the 98 GSX it will have 2 filters. 1 in each carb the difference on my carbs is that that master has the set up for the pulse system on it and number 2 towards the aft side of the ski simply has an elbow that feeds into the adapter plate and right under the adapter plate is the second filter screen. When I went through my fuel system this is where the majority of the debris was at in the system in respect to the carburetors. The second major contributor to my blockage was in the fuel selector valve.

If anyone knows why my horn goes off (one long beep) intermittently with no associated message that would be helpful. I'm contemplating at shotgunning the cylinder head temperature sensor as I cant find the resistance values anywhere. Don't know if I'm on the right track or not.

Let us know how your second carb looks.

Ill let ya know

I will pull off the second filter tonight when I get home. I didn't realize that there was another one. Hopefully thats the issue. Where exactally is the blockage in the fuel selector switch. Is there a filter on that as well, or does it just get gummed up in there???

Filter Location

So the second filter isn't located in the same place as the first. Do I have to remove the carbs to get the filters out??? I am trying to not have to remove the carbs just yet, until the winter. I plan on doing a rebuild over the winter. I am just hoping to clean out the major problem areas right now. By the way, what part of the fuel control switch gets gunked up, and how do I remove that part. I should hit that as well since I'm trying to get this thing running right.

Thanks for you help.

The fuel selector could be gummed up but usually its that rubber piece inside that gets all chewed up after time. Bypass the fuel selector valve all together to be sure... or switch it to reserve while running and see if the symptons improve... I just been through all of this myself.

Carbs.

Attached is a link to a thread that tells you all you need to know about carbs., carb filters, rebuilding carbs, all you will probably need is the first PDF file.

I would replace the fuel selector valve, the knob on the newer style is much stronger and not as likely to crack, its cheap to buy and not worth the hassle of cleaning the old one. You can buy an new one for $25-$30.
