Hello 1st time post

I just bought a 96 seadoo challenger 110hp

Took it out a couple of time and ran like a champ.....but last weekend I took it out and ran fine for about 5 min and then it bogged down. I throttled down and it seamed to Idle just fine but when I tried to throttle up it would hit 3k rpm and would not go past that point? I have cleaned the rave valves and replaced the spark plugs.....I am not sure what is going on

Any suggestions......*****Please Help******

Thanks,
Tim96

If it’s getting to 3000, and it seems like it is bouncing off a limiter… it is. There is a neutral safety switch on the shift lever, and they are known to stick. Pull the 4 screws off of the shifter/throttle plate, and you can get to it.

Good luck

To add to Dr honda, there are 4 screws on the control cover, and 4 more to be removed under the cover plate...spray all 8 screws down good with PB Blaster, 4 at a time per cover, as they have a tendency to corrode and snap off if you don't spray lube on them first. The switch is in between the control unit with a small screw that holds it in place, coming up from the bottom of the controll unit. Usually the spring at it's top sticks and won't allow the engine to know it is in gear. The safety limiter is on, allow it to act like it is. Either spray it good or carefull remove it and clean it up so it springs back and forth. When you see it you'll under stand how it works. If you still get stuck let us know and we'll help out.

The brown thing in the pic is a mirror and is showing you the crack in the head or cylinder?....I am just wondering if I am S.O.L on my boat? What do I need to do to fix this problem can I put JB weld on it for a temp fix until the season is over and fix it right in the winter?......And is this causing my boat not to go past 3k rpm? My boat starts and idels real nice and runs up to 3k but once I hit 3k it starts to cough and smoke bad.

Please help
Thanks,

Tim, I see it now...if that crack is spewing out water you might have a big problem. It could lead to over heating condition. It woudn't lead to a poor running condition, because it seems to be in the water jacket of the cylinder and not the cylinder area. You could try jb weld and see if it works. I'd keep a good eye on it all the time if you go that way. Did you look into the sticky rev limiter safety switch? I had a 1997challenger that experienced the same exact problem. I sprayed it good and it was fine after that.

Got your PM… sorry, I forgot to respond.

Anyway, the crack is superficial… BUT… it needs fixed. That is the water jacket, and that is where the water runs to cool the engine. If you don’t fix it, you could fill the boat with water, or overheat your engine. At full throttle, I would imagine that it would be spraying a lot of water, and like Karl said… it shouldn’t make a difference in how the engine is running otherwise. (so it’s not your 3000 rpm prob)

I would pull that jug, and weld it, but if you clean the crack very well with a wire brush, and a little alcohol… you can fill it with JB weld (you can buy it at any auto parts store) and that will seal the crack. The problem is… JB weld is a temporary fix… and it will make welding it up later extremely difficult. The person doing the repair will have to grind it out of the crack, and weld up a larger hole because of it. At that point… the repair cost may be more than buying a new jug.

Also… like Karl said… did your check you switch?? It is a known problem with Seadoo. It is there to keep you from revving the engine in neutral.

I check the neutral safty switch and all is working fine?.....still baffled why I am stalling at 3k rpms and it is smoking a bit. Any other suggestions?

could it be a carb problem seems like it is running rich....but why all the sudden?

Take a look at the attachments I am going to try JB Weld....hopefully it will help with the problem.....

I have not check the compression.....where can I get a compression tester at?.....and could someone take me though this procedure step by step

Thanks alot

Ok.....a little update.

Like I had mentioned earlier

cleaned rave valves
cleaned inline fuel filter
changed spark plugs
removed neutral safty switch (cleaned)
fixed crack

Now boat runs like a champ no leaks and is real strong

Thanks to all who help me in my problem
