951 from 98 GTX into a 98 xpl- not quite working

Well I bought a 98 XPL with a bad motor, picked up a good 951 from a 98 GTX that had a bad hull... Replaced all fuel lines, filter, cleaned carbs/carb filters.. Running pre mix 40:1. The first issue is that the tach seems to be reading about 3,000 rpms too high.. I havent been able to confirm it with an external tach but it is undoubtedly reading high... In addition when the tach reads about 7200 or so the rev limiter kicks in, as it should, however, it sounds like the engine is (In my beast estimate) only turning about 4500. Does the gtx motor send a different signal then the xpl motor??

In addition, I might have two unrelated issues, but it also won't accelerate in the water.. will hardly get on plane, and smokes a ton.. I have the LS needles set about 1.5 turns out and the highs about an 1/8th turn out... Too rich? Pop off valves and seats looked good and clean, though I didn't check pressure. Could it have anything to do with the raves opening too early due to the wrong rpm signal? Compression is about 135 in both.. Any input is greatly appreciated..

Part numbers for stator, pickup, and flywheel for both engines appear to be the same.. What could I be missing here? Why would the tach read so high? I don't care so much about not having an accurate reading on the tach but I would imagine the computer is opening the raves and advancing timing to early as well...

the part # for the magneto is the same? the one from my 98 GTX had 2 small metal tags on it, the one from my 02 XP had 3 small and one long on it. cause massive misfiring and never could start.

You could get an after market tach to verify the oem one. Your signature says 99 XP, is it a 98 or 99?

99 went to dual coil and uses a different setup than the 98 did...

Part numbers are the same, however, I'm wondering if this motor actually came from a 98 ...I was taking the guys word for it.. but the ignition cover looks different then the one from my 98, and the oil pump cable configuration was different as well.. But parts break downs and part number says it should be the same between the gtx and xpl. When I look at the parts break downs for newer skis, like an 02, they show the cover that my "new" motor has.. Also the newer skis with the different cover have a different part number for the flywheel/magneto.. My old motor has just two magneto tabs.. I'm wondering if this donor motor didn't come from a 98, and since it has the newer cover, probably a different magneto with three tabs like you described. I guess I'm going to pull the ignition cover and check.. And I guess I will have to pull the motor back out to change the magneto.. We'll see.

Nope. you don't

Ive' changed Magnetos, stators, and the the cover / oil pump in my 02 XP without taking the engine out.

I mean, you can obviously pull the engine if you want, but it is possible to do the work without pulling it...

I've done it twice now.

you don't even pull the pipe.

remove the front motor mount from engine tab.
run an engine lift / hoist to engine lift point, loosen rear 2 engine mounts (do not remove), snug up engine by lifting a hair.

remove front motor mount from hull, careful of the flat metal spacers.

lift engine up a hair / click more.

you can remove oil tank / pump line, then remove the magneto cover (you could / should have removed the oil tank first, but I may not write chronologically)

anyway, remove the oil pump without disconnecting the oil lines to the carbs, so you don't have to re-bleed them.

then remove the magneto ground wires, then cover (10-12 screws) then pop it off (that rubber ring gasket is a beach some times, get it right or you will be removing the engine again!)

then you can feel down for the metal 'tabs' on the magneto held in place with 6 bolts.

AS FAR AS I KNOW, WITH NO IMPLIED WARRANTY OR ACCURACY: the 99+ should have 3 metal tabs on it and one longer tab.

the 99+ has a dual coil setup

Anyway, the LONG tab should be at the TOP of the engine (remember the engine is slanted over, so TOP is slanted with it) while the MAG piston is at the BOTTOM of it's travel. That's how my 02 was setup. so LONG tab = TOP while the front piston is at the BOTTOM (remove the plugs and MAG RAVE to see the piston)

bolt that sucker on tight with red lock tite, you will use a small rope or similar to keep engine from turning while removing / replacing bolts in the magneto.

I learned all this last weekend when I replaced the engine in my 02 and it would never start and kept back firing... I thought I had a drop in engine for a 02.. but I missed the dissimilar part # of the damn magneto...

Old engine would run 6K some time, sometimes 7K sometimes 6k, I may have figured out why, but only after replacing the whole damn engine.

Also, if you ever remove an engine and forget the line for the drain on the bottom of the block... it will pull off from the jet pump and you will have to crush your hands to get the damn thing back together. not to mention move the exhaust hose, and remove the jet pump and remove the VTS to get to it... wasting HOURS of time... but last night on the river... it was running GREAT. 6,800 WOT, which is to be expected w/a Concord 15/20. (stock prop test = 7K WOT, but only 60 MPH... touches 65 MPH with the concord and is quicker out of the hole)

Yeah that was my alternate plan.. leave it in and lift the front.. I'm gonna pull the cover later and I'll know what the deal is.. I'm kinda hoping I find 3 tabs on the magneto because that would pretty much explain the why this thing is running so wacky..

Well I got the cover/stator/oil pump off, which was surprsingly easy to do with the motor in, and sure enough there are 3 short and 1 long strips on the rotor.. the old one has 2 long... leads me to believe this engine was not from a 98 like i was told.. I'm gonna put the parts from the old motor into this one and see how she does, just waiting on a starter solenoid and oil pump block off plate.

If you are willing to part with that incorrect part let me know, I may want one... most of my skis are 99+ and use the one with 3 short 1 long strip.
