Did you check all the electrical components before putting in the "new" MPEM? The Rectifier diode could be burned in the ON position, ect?
Did you go over the Harness for anything melted, cut, broken, ripped, or corroded? Use a #55 wire drill to check the female AMP connectors?
I use Toluol 1 part to 4 parts gas for cleaning rails, injectors, and to bring in-tank fuel pumps back from the dead. Inspect the Pintols? Sometimes you can boil them in H20 to get them working.
The first (old) customer that owned it hired me to come out and see why it would not start, I found 12v pos on the neg side of the starter solenoid relay side and 6v at all times on the "start" pos side of the relay which would go up to 7v when you tried to start it, so I traced it back and found it kept blowing the 30amp fuse and another fuse and there was smoke that came from the ski (not as a result of me) I traced it back to a bad mpem, instructed the customer the mpem was bad but there was smoke and most likely could have a short somewhere as well and would need to trace the main harness to be sure, customer refused further diagnosis as mpem was enough, customer then sold ski to another person of which the old customer gave them my business info and they brought the ski to me for repair, I informed the customer right off the bat that old customer never had me test anything else so there could be a strong chance of other problems as well, still they just wanted to order the new mpem and continue work to see if that was it, first thing I did was disconnect the regulator/rectifier just in case as it is badly corroided and don't want to chance anything yet. As soon as I hooked new mpem in I connected the battery and heard the injectors click, so I tried again and they would click every time, so I connected battery to check systems quick and disconnected injector harnesses, plug them back in with no key on post and you will get 1 click only when you connect them, mag side injector shows signs of heat or arching on plastic slightly melted....... Read ohms of each injector and was 2ohms each if I remember correctly, then attached voltmeter to harness and shows around 1v to injector with no key on post. I cannot locate injector diagnosis on these as thus reason I am asking.
It got dark out so I stopped for the night as well customer has not auth further diagnosis so I need to hear back from customer first to auth further diagnosis and repair. I swear it looks like either it sat with saltwater in the bilge or something, I have never seen one so bad, I mean the top of the tank fuel pump is litterally falling apart, theres no way it won't need to be replaced.......
I did warn them that there could be further problems since nothing else was tested.
Ski before you put key on post and nothing would happen not even any gauges come on then every so often you would get the 2 beeps and it would supply the extra volt to the relay thus me diagnosing the problem, new mpem in and after about 10-15mins leaving key on and off post it then started 2 beeps every time and has had no more issues, ski also cranks over now when you try to start, mpem was known bad however no further diagnosis has been made yet at this time.
I wouldnt think I should see any voltage at all to the injectors with the key off the post it should read 0v in my eyes, but thats why I am checking. I do not usually service di skis, however this was about forced onto me and I have tons of experience with the 951's and electronic fuel injection in general.
I just need customer authorization for me to proceed at this time.
I know its gonna kill them, I believe the old owner put the ski up for $2800 before my diagnosis they then told customers calling $2700 minus the mpem and labor....... so around $600 off price thus around $2100-$2200 for the ski, the customers would call me on it before going to look at it and I am stuck in the middle trying to keep an business attitude, stating that price is just minus the mpem and labor so thats not really worth it to me as we know a ski is worth more running and now as this one turns out is a prime example of why.............. When people sell these I tell customers all the time if you are not a mechanic and your going to look at a ski that "just needs a starter" or " just needs a battery" 9.99 times out of 10 thats not the only problem........

The connectors on mpem and harness side both look fine, oddly enough only the mpem connections and inside rear elect box look good, all the rest of this ski I swear looks like it was submerged and left with the salt all over inside it......
Again the rectifier on the side of the mpem mount has been temp disconnected, after a little testing I did reconnect it and nothing changed, no blown fuses and no problems with it connected, but I wanted to start off with it off to check the system.
It would be nice to find out where the magic smoke came from when I first looked at this ski 2 months ago as I am certain it did not come from the rear box nor the mpem, all topside looks good so I suspect a shorted wire inside the main harness at this point......sigh.....I explained it to the customer before, I showed up and the battery was dead and rear 30 amp fuse blown and one of the mpem fuses where blown customer then replaced both and I put a fully charged battery in, instantly one of the fuses blew when putting key on post, customer decided to replace and try again for testing as soon as they did I put the key on to test with my meter and before I attach the meter magic smoke came out off the hull, nothing changed at that point at this same time I found the incorrect voltages and power on the ground side to the starter relay so since smoke I disconnected the battery, customer stated why disconnect the battery, I explained the ski is in your garage and smoke just came out..... do you like your house? I explained as a fire as a result of a burning ski would not be good, customer was happy only knowing part of the problem being a bad mpem, when he heard it would be a min $600 to fix he said no way and decided to sell it as it sat.
Sadly I can only test and diagnose what a customer allows me too.
