95 xp, water leaks in somewheres

ok i have a 95 xp. when i run the ski out of the water it doesnt not seem to fill up, but when in the water it fills up and therefore makes the ski run terrible. I took the exhuast out to see if i can see and cracks but nothing. I filled the hull up with water in my driveway and the hull was not leaking that i could see or find. any ideas? thanks

Check all your exhaust rubber hose fittings and make sure they aren't busted. Water could be coming in from several diff point.

- Busted exhaust hoses

- Rear seal around pump

- Driveshaft seal

- crack in hull

- busted water line in ski.


Just some pointers....

Check your output shaft just aft of the grease fitting...there should be a dust/water boot on the shaft. That boot attaches to a metal ring on the shaft that is held in place by a woodruff key (the half-moon shaped metal keys). If that woodruff key has fallen out, your ski will begin to fill with water once you put it in.
Check the pix, its worth a thousand words!

Back ski tied to trailor at the launch into the water to submerge rear, start engine and search. Remove the plastic drive collar behind engine, are bailer lines tied up?
Rev engine, if water coming in bailers, the venturi O-rings are missing. Bills86e

I want to know if someone can tell if the metal ring he's talking about in the picture above is suppossed to have any play in it. On my ski i can grab the engine side of the boot which is were the metal ring is. I can move it like a seal or bushing is wore out.

GTX vs XP

Your avatar states you have a GTX!? Your drivetrain is similar, but different to the XP's. You need the shop manual to look closely at your setup.
On both ski's, that metal ring is called the floating ring...on the XP, there is NO play. That metal ring is held in place on the XP's with a woodruff key...on the GTX (I believe) it is a circlip.
By "move", do you mean you it has radial play...or axial play?
Radial play would indicate the 0-rings under the floating ring are worn...axial play (depending n the degree of play) would indicate the circlip is missing.

The woodruff key on mine fell off and allowed the floating ring to move allowing sooooooo much water in I almost sank in about 5 mins! (barely made it back to the ramp)
I would say YES, it is a definite possibility. Try Bills86e troubleshooting...that is a surefire way to check! :agree:

Sorry to hi jack this thread, but I also have a 95 XP that's taking on water, among a couple other problems. I'm also having an issue where I seem to be loosing power, the engine revs, but I get no thrust. The engine seems to be running fine out of the water.

Could this be a sign that the seal at the drive shaft has gone bad?

I also have a constant beep intermittently. All these problems seemed to come up at once, and after I replaced the gray fuel lines and cleaned the filters in my carbs. I'm no expert mechanic, but everything seems to be together properly. Looking for ideas. Thanks!

You must pull the jetpump and replace the broken driveshaft. Beeping because the venturi pressure is zero, no water being pressured thru the
engine to cool it. Bills86e

You think the drive shaft is broken? Maybe I should have been more specific, I do get some thrust, and can idle along, but if I give it gas, it seems to bog down and vibrate.

...are you taking on water through the driveshaft seal? Mine had the same symptoms and it took on water quickly!

I wish I knew for sure. It doesn't take on water quickly, I can't actually 'see' the water entering.... in fact it doesn't take on enough water to prevent me from riding. There is maybe an inch of water at most in the bottom of the hull after an hour or two of riding.

I figure water must be seeping in through the seal?
