95 XP 787 stalls after water splash in sharp turns

I got my XP running recently after it had sat idle for a while. It seems to run fine running straight ahead, but if I make a hard 180 and get into some splash, the engine stalls and loses power (doesn't die). Then it tends to sputter when I hit the throttle and never regains any power. The next day, again it starts fine but suffers the same fate if I get into any splash. The compartment seems relatively dry and I don't see any water on anything with the seat off. Any ideas?

Same issue with 95 SPI

Bought the ski one week ago. Worked on it for a solid week and got it running. Second time out I cut a hard left turn and could never give it full throttle again without it cutting off or threatening to. After a while it would do little more then idle without cutting off. It was a long trip back to the trailer with a passenger @ 2mph. I hope someone could solve this one. It would " kill two birds with one stone"

I haven't had my ski back in the river yet. However, after looking it over I realized that while the fuel gauge worked a few days ago, it no longer does. Its stuck @ 3/4 full. I think when i spun it around it had trouble getting fuel for the first time that day. I believe the reason it got progressively worse as I "limped" back to the ramp was that when I would go to take off the ski's nose naturally rises out of the water and subsequently the fuel washes to the back of the tank and away from the pump...
I'm not sure that this is my problem, but it sure seems like a great start. After all I read in the process of trying to trouble shoot it I WILL be changing my fuel lines out this coming week.
I hope your problem is solved... for that matter I hope mine is too...

Fuel Tank Baffel

I would remove the fuel baffel from the fuel tank and take a look at it.

The float for the gas guage rides in a seperate chamber of the baffel, so I don't think that this is necessarily the problem. However you might have sediment or water in the tank that is affecting both the fuel float and fuel pickup side of the baffel.

This is not a hard job, release the fuel tank bungies, pull the 4 fuel lines from the baffel (be sure to mark them so they go back the way they were). Pull the tank forward, loosen the clamp and pull straight up on the baffel.

This should be done with less than 1/4 tank of gas in the tank. You can also check the tank for sediment, and water. Also check the bottom of the baffel, I think there is a screen at the bottom.

Have you changed the gray fuel lines?

Make sure you have more than 1/4 tank of gas, mine had the same problems. Filled it up and ran great

Let me know if you have any luck with this. I am thinking maybe the splash shorted out the electrical or maybe some splash made its way to the intake. I will let you know if I find anything. I know the tank had more than enough gas. I had a car that did this and the problem was water in the gas which was alleviated with an additive. GarnerF

Hey...I had a similar situation with one of my 96XP's... you might want to look into replacing your fuel lines because the stock lines tend to deteriorate and create a sludge like material that clogs your lines... also check your fuel valve because I have had two 96 XP's that had clogged fuel valves and the fuel pump on the carb is not always strong enough to pull fuel through the clogged valve or fuel lines... If you want to replace your fuel line it will cost you about $35, just go to your local auto store and get about 21ft. of 1/4 inch fuel line and about 25 stainless steel hose clamps and start replacing one hose at a time. It sounds like alot of work but is really quite simple. Also like the others have said check your fuel baffle in the tank and if your ski has been sitting for a year with old fuel you might just have bad fuel or moisture build up... Hope this helps ya...
