So I came across this ad today on Craigslist. Normally I wouldn't look twice on this but this ski caught my eye. It is in pretty amazing condition. I just got off the phone with this guy and he said an older couple used to own it, he is moving to another state and is selling this so he can help pay for the move. Lives about 2 hours away from me.

He has not done a compression check on it but if I was going to check it out I was going to bring one with me. I figured it may be worth it alone for the trailer!

Anyway you guys tell me what you think. I have rode on this model before and I do like the speed, getting on is a biatch though in deep water (look like a beached whale), but it looks like this guy even has a fat guy bar!

Probably a pretty good deal if you want a trailer queen, it's got the 657x which I think is 80HP. Personally I would spend a couple of hundred more and get a 96XP or something with a little more power.

I originally was set on a 96XP to be honest with you. I was just waiting for the right one to come along and I came across this. The average price right now for the XP with a trailer is around $1800 according to what is out there. I just figured if I could spend half that, if may be worth it even to keep this till spring and sell and make a little cash maybe even.

Anyone ever tell you that you looks just like David Gilmour? lol

We need to take a trip across the US, picking up skis as we go, and resell them here. We could be like American Pickers. lol

I just saw that they have a '97 Yamaha 1200GP Wave Runner at the auction place. Not sure how much it will fetch, but it might be something to look at too. The bad thing is, it's 3 hours in the other direction, plus we'd have to leave my house by 5:30am, yawn...

man, we really need a guy with a hauler that can drag about 10 ski's up north from Florida to you...

I think you may have a lot of fun on that ole girl Pravious. Go talk to the guy and he may fess it up for less. Way to rock the ole Gilmore pic proudly btw!

Absolutely!!! :-) They seem to go for so much more here, even with the bad economy. When I was looking for mine, people were sometimes asking double what the blue book value was, and would not budge on the price. Then when I'd fonr one for a decent price, they wouldn't have a trailer. We have so many lakes right where I live, I have 5 good sized lakes with launches, within 5 minutes of my house, and people who live on the lakes usually don't have a trailer when they go to sell.

Well hello there scrisp. Did not expect to see you on here! Pleasent surprise however. Dude I would love to just travel and find cool stuff, fix it and resell it. Would LOVE IT!

Gilmour is my hero.

EDIT: keep the comments coming guys, going to be setting something up with this dude today most likely. That is if scrisp is still down to go and bring the compression checker :)

Always worth a look, it is about 2 hours for me as well, maybe combine it with a trip to Frankenmooth to pick up a few christmas decorations!

If it had a double trailer I would take a look at it, something for the wife to putt around on, but no worries I don't have any place to put it. I already have a 4 wheeler, 2 power wheels, 26" snowblower, 21ft bayliner, RX-DI, a few strollers (i dont know why we still hold on to them) and a Ford Flex in my garage, and meaner than shit deed restrictions.

Grab some over rated chicken and go browse Christmas decorations in October... only in Michigan. lol

I was actually kinda scared to post this ad on this site because we have so many Michigan people here, I figured it would have gotten snatched from me! Glad the community is cool here though, give me a chance to get some toys fellas! I have none :(

Dude that is super awesome of you. My brother in law (scrisp on the forums) and I are planning on going up there on Saturday to check it out. We should meet up and have lunch or something, I'll buy to celebrate my new ski (the least I can do for all of your help on here).

I do really appreciate the offer though. BTW Brock what is your thoughts on the 95 SPX's? Would be interested to think what you think of this deal (pending engine is in good condition)

Now if this is your first toy keep looking, it is like you are settling for the Accord with the limp 4 cylinder as your first ride. Yeah it will get you somewhere, but keep looking in my opinion.

All of us are pretty cool here, or atleast misery loves company, I am not certain yet of which one it is!

its not a bad ski, our neighbor had one, should jump nearly or as good as a 718 XP.

are trailers really that hard to come by up there? guess i should have sent my roadmaster single to michigan.

My issue is justifying spending a large amount of money to my wife. She is cool with letting me have toys but she does not understand that fall is typically a better time to buy than spring. My attraction to this ski was the price and the condition. It's a trailer queen alright, but the price is also right. It's a good way to get introduced into the sport and worst comes to worst I do not think I will ever have an issue selling that for $1100-$1200 with the trailer, especially after I go through and do the fuel lines, carb work, and all that good stuff. So in the least it may turn out to be a few hundred bucks profit in the spring then I can buy my 96 XP.

That's my thought process anyhow.

They are around, just hard to find a trailer in nice condition with a ski for under 1k.

It is good logic, but not much of a point to resell it in the spring, you won't even get a chance to ride it unless you take it south, deep south! I would personally hold out until you get the one you really want and then you don't have to mess with transporting, rebuilding, storing, dealing with all the idiots on craigslist trying to sell it, lowballing you, etc.
It doesn't take long to get into the sport, try one out from a buddy or rent one somewhere. I used to 3-4 times a year rent one in Pattaya Beach in Thailand (my job took me there all the time) until the past couple of years when they started getting crappy and running scams on them. I was hooked the first run.
When I rode my RX-DI the first time in Lake Meade when my friend bought it, it blew me away, glad I picked it up when he sold it. I am by far the fastest ride on Whitmore lake.

pravius...just being completly honest with ya ...if this is your first ski then dont buy that one...that 657 has no balls at all and if you can give me some time i may be able to get you a 96 xp for around 1200 or so....I personally would not buy that ski but its up to you and your budget...i had a 95 xp with the 720 in it and it just wasnt enough power or speed....i have wridden the 657 and its boring ...especially if you want to jump with it....it wont have the power to shoot you off the top of the wave like a 96 xp will...thats just my opinion ....oh and BTW i appreciate the offer but there is literally NOWHERE in hale to eat except subway...seriously LOL

Oh THAT's Hale!! lol That's the place with the Subway in the gas station right? I have a friend who lives in Harrisville and drive M72 to M65 and come south through Hale all the time. All of those little towns, Hale, Glennie, Whittemore, all look the same to me, except that Whittemore has that great little racetrack that gets busy on saturday nights. :-)

Pravius (my brother in law) rode my SPX and the only problem that we had was when it tipped over. lol I have never tipped it until that day and then we both did it within an hour of each other. It was real PITA to get back on it, I could get up on it, but just was I was about to slide forward on the seat, it would tip over again. It is my first ski and I'm actually thinking of looking for a gently used 98 or 99 GSX LTD or XP LTD with the 951 motor. I don't jump much, but do love flat out running across smooth water.

We both just noticed how much cheaper these are in the fall than than the spring, and how much people are afraid to do any maintenance and repair on them.

I had a line on a really nice 96 XP, they had ran over a rope and there was a vibration right afterwards. He sent me pics of the compression checker as he was testing them, both cylinders were at 145 or so, and it was in great shape other than the vibration. In one of the pics, you could see the rope/string wrapped around the drive shaft. Not sure how it got in there when he ran over it, but he had it up for sale for $750 with no trailer. I was ready to grab it and someone beat me to it. Ended up, it just needed 5 minutes of cutting the rope out and it was running like new again. That's where we're I'm looking at picking them up for a decent price and making a bit of $$ to fund my next ski. lol

Little things like repalcing wear rings or an impeller, are beyond what a lot of people want to do or know how to do. I'm not an expert on these yet, but have worked on cars my whole life and these seem way less complicated than cars. :-)

I have emailed a few of those dudes already Brock, the dude with the XP back in August never responded, the other dude I am about to email right now actually. You guys are right actually $600 for that much more HP would be worth it and I should not settle. I just can't stop thinking how nice this spx is... do not see too many of those come around in that good condition, although we do only see one side of the ski and the engine compartment is not pictured.

I was gonna ask too, are the XP models really that much faster than the SPX? It doesn't seem like 25-30hp would make that much difference, but I guess that is 35-40% more than mine, so I guess it might be.

How are the 951 motors in the 98 and 99 models? Are they reliable and bulletproof like some of the others?
