95 speedster

I have a 95 speedster i have just purchased the lady i bought it from said it ran great but needed two ned batteries i got two batteries from our local batteries dealer and my father put them in and he said it was barely turning over and a few wires strted to smoke from this plug in the pics below can anyone help me whats worng or ideas?

That connector is just the stator. The only way that could get enough current to smoke is if your rectifier/regulator has gone bad. Did your dad hook up the battery backwards... just for a second or two?? I'm not saying he did... I'm just looking for a clue.

Anyway... make sure the batteries are charged, and disconnect the red lead at the regulator, and try to start it.
 
thanks to being a premium member i got the correct answer to my boating problem the tech guy answered my question to a T with in an hour or so of my post and was right just a simple ground prob got her all fixed up and shrinkwrapped again and got both motors running ready to put her in the water.

If u guys r not a premium i would def suggest u become one these guys have the most knowledge and will do all they can to help step by step.
