Hey guys . I’m new to the seadoo world and recently was given a hidden gem from an older woman who lived down the street . It’s a mint condition. 92’(i believe because of motor color) hasn’t been out of the garage since the last registration sticker of 93’. The word was they tried to start it the following season and didn’t have any luck getting it going and put it away and bought new ones. I’ve looked it over and for the most part everything’s there and no visual issues . I’ve hooked it up to power and within a hour or so i had it running like a top. Got it in the water and the ride lasted about 5 mins . It went from running great to dead / with no restart. Now when trying to start it i have a rattling sound . Took the cover off the flywheel and whatever’s making the sound it seems to be right behind the fly wheel. I’ve read up and plan to get a puller , if anyone can tell me the thread and size for bolts to go into the flywheel I’d appreciate it . I feel the magneto had broken and fallen apart and getting banged around . But also not sure if that would cause the motor not to run at all. But also i know from a few friends the older skis had a lot of issues . And I’m looking for any advice for things to looks for. Seems to have all the black fuel lines which i read they were grey when they came out so looks like someone’s tinkered with it but looking for any advice to get this neon icon on the water.

Sorry, how did you remove the flywheel cover? You pretty much need to remove the engine from the ski to do that. Do you mean the grey plastic shield behind the engine that covers the driveshaft and carbon ring seal?

A broken magneto would definately kill the ski as the pickup coil gets its signal from the magneto to ultimately fire the spark plugs through the ignition coil. I'd be hard pressed to understand HOW a magneto could break though?????...they are steel plates wrapped in copper windings....highly unlikely to break and rattle around inside the flywheel housing.....that would be a real mess I would think.

Your ski has been sitting for ages.....can't expect it to be road worthy right out of the chute....gonna have to baby it for a bit. Check all wiring harness connections, fuses, clean the carbs, etc......

Thanks for the input . I know it’s been sitting and i figured maybe something became brittle and broke off . Yes i just meant i took the cover off that is covering the flywheel and starter right near the battery . And the rattling sound sounds like it’s right behind the flywheel only reason i was thinking maybe the magneto. Just doesn’t sound like anything internal . But I’ll do some more investigation on it hopefully today. Just need to get that fly wheel off and out of my way. And I’m hoping i can see the problem .

OK got it.....btw that is not the flywheel you are talking about, that is the PTO on the rear end of the engine. The starter is under the engine probably directly under the carbs, the starter drives the flywheel to pump the pistons, etc. The magneto is bolted inside the flywheel cover on the front of the engine towards the front of the ski.

First thing I would do.....and I am not 100% sure your ski has this (but my '96 GTX does)...look around the area where you took off the plastic cover and see if there is a grease fitting on / near the PTO disk (rotate the disk by hand). Try to push some fresh marine grease in with a grease gun (if you have/find a fitting)...not a lot, this should cause the rubber boot to swell slightly and should push the carbon ring seal to tighten it up. After all those years of sitting, things dry out and shrink.

Since the ski has started, etc.....I doubt your having problems with the magneto....but you could be experiencing another electrical problem....which we can get into a little later.

So third is just a photo from google image of visually the same motor. The cover that says bombardier rotax is the cover i removed and is in the front of the ski and can even see the cone of where the starter would fit. I can see the starter engage onto this whee when trying to start . Perhaps you thought of a different motor . But that is the cover i removed and it towards the front . But before i waste all your time . Let me do some work on it and hopefully get this whee off and get some better photos of what I’m seeing .

I really appreciate your time . Thank you . I’ll come hack to this thread when i get some real photos and knowlendge of what we’re working with

Oh, so you did remove the engine? . Yes, the ROTAX cover is the flywheel cover, the magneto will be inside there. I could be wrong BUT I think that circled fitting is part of the cooling system, the oil line would be under the engine. My '96 engine is setup different....the picture would indicate (I think) that your starter is on the left side of the ski (if I were standing behind the ski)...mine is on the right hand side, tucked under the carbs. Looks like your starter is tucked under the exhaust side of the engine......

I have not removed it yet. That oil fitting thing is from a google image . I was just using this photo from google as an example of the motor i have and the way it’s set up. I’ll be in touch . Let me get a little deeper and can get actual photos and possible culprits. Thanks for the help bud .

You need a flywheel puller but be careful with the bolts that thread into the flywheel because if you run them in too deep you’ll destroy the stator windings.

The manuals a available for free. Just google Seadoo manuals.

Just got this . And i also read that about the bolts . Thanks for the reminder . Later on this afternoon i will get that flywheel off and come back to this thread with actual photos and hopefully shed a little light on what i got going on. Thanks
