I'm going to be ready to drop the engine in my 96 GTX pretty soon. I have heard terms such as "leveling" of the engine and drive shaft but not really sure how to do that. I have done several motor pulls and installs on cars but this will be my first jet ski. Any helpful links or advice like "hey don't forget to hook that thingamabopper to the doohickey" would be great. I'm looking forward to getting that GTX going! Thanks is advance!

Well, the "leveling", actually is the alignment between the driveshaft and the pto and the pump, so you will need an alignment tool.

Make sure you have a good metric socket set of tools, especially 10's and 13's. A hex and star bit long sockets that fit into your socket wrench are the bee's knees, you can get them at harbor real cheap, great for attaching carbs and starters and alot of other pieces on a seadoo.

Make sure you clean out the oil tank real good before you put the motor in, it helps to have it drained as well.

One thing i like to do is hook up the rotary valve bath hoses to the motor before i put it in the ski, it is a good time to test for leaks, i have had the one under the exhaust leak before and it was a PITA to fix as i had already reassembled and had to take it all apart to fix the leak, think racerxxx has a story about that as well...

Hmm what else what else, just go slow, take your time. I like to put the carbs on the engine before I install it, make sure all the gaskets are in place and what not, that is just personal preference tho.

Dont forget the rubber bumpers in the driveshaft. Lol its been a while since ive done a swap

I remember this was the motor out of the spx, what was the final verdict on the compression of this motor?

Great advice! Thanks! What type of leveling tool do I need? And where can I find the procedure for doing this?

X2 on Reynolds. I wouldn't do a swap without the alignment tool (pour gas on fire), and yes tighten the RV hoses but be careful the hose clamps can nick the line and create an oil leak.:banghead:

Always trim up the oil lines before you put them on, make sure to put the hose clamps right up to the barb and dont overtighten them. Make sure the cylinder drain line is also hooked up.

I typically put the bottom of the pipe in before I bolt the motor in, you can put the pipe in all in one piece...but it makes it a bit of a PITA.

I always plug it in and crank it over ASAP just to make sure I have spark before I put it all together. No fun doing alignment twice.

If you put the carbs on, make sure you watch the choke butterflies carefully when you put the motor in. You may have to move the motor around to get them in, or wire them closed. I bent a butterfly pulling a motor out of a GTX when the carbs were on.

spx787 - if you haven't already purchased the tool, I can loan you one. $30 bucks for my time, and cover the shipping both ways. If you don't plan to swap a bunch of motors, should save you some cash. drop me a PM if you are interested. Good luck!
