Got a new project! Purchased a 1994 XP... here's the history.

It's been through a couple owners that could not get it running, including having the engine swapped out. I believe the issue is it originally had a 657 and now has a 657X, at least by the tag on the flywheel cover (which may not be original).

How do I know for sure which engine is which?

Also how do you identify between a dual or single coil? Are the magnetos the same?

My 1994 XP had the 657x. I believe the 1993 had the standard 657.

If you read 657X on the tag that is what it is. I have 657X here and it is apart. I'll help you identify parts if you need to. Good Luck.

Need help identifying this electrical system. It it for a 657 or 657x? IMG_20210517_195533_8.jpg

The part number for the MPEM should be on the backside. Remove it and take a look. That will help.

It looks like the 029 box is for the trim, and the 071 is for a 1994 657x. The stator and box both have the 5 wire setup, now wondering if the flywheel is a 657 instead of a 657x.

Any ideas if the flywheel is the same between the 657 and 657x? If not, is there a way to easily identify between the two?
