Hello

Have a ´96 GTX which is working great, except one thing. At WOT the tach shows about 6500 rpm. New set of carbs with accel pump is installed. I dont notice any bogging or stumbling, in water it restarts with just a push on the start button. I checked the rave valves and it was looking fine. They looked black but nothing excessive buildup on them. Just the extra oil i put in the fuel tank for the break-in period. I cleaned them but haven´t tested the ski since then.

Maybe running too rich? I didnt touch the hi speed screws but i backed out the low speed screws for easy starts and smoother idle.

Also tested the compression and it was about 175 psi. Too much or extremely good, or poor gauge?

Warm it up good since its a new engine then hold it WOT for about 15 seconds and pull the lanyard off and pull the plugs. Look at the colour of them. they should be a brownish colour, little darker because of extra oil. but not terribly black and dripping.

Also at wot, pull the choke ever so slightly and see if rpm increase or decrease. Easy way to tell if you are rich or lean.

It runs good, starts right up with a push of the button, plugs just a little black from break in oil and is fun to ride. Maybe the tach is a little off being that it is probably 18yrs old.
My opinion - "if it ain't broke don't fix it."

Great minds think alike! That's exactly what I was going to say.

Starts, fun to ride, ain't broke....

Thanks for all the responses. I thought the tach should be more accurate than the speedo.

I´ll try the choke method at WOT the next time at sea, lower rpms while choke is on means it´s running rich, or vice versa..?

The accel pump makes a noticable diff in my opinion, much more agile...

What type of tach are you runnning? It could be off a little. Have you ever messed with the prop? It could be a little steep and holding back your RPMs.

if you have a gps check your top speed wot should be around 53-55mph if so you should be good to go.
also keep in mind that if your are riding in high altitude may cause rpm to drop as well. mine drops to 6450 rpm at 4800ft above sea leval. at 2700 ft it is 6800 rpm
