I've had my 2011 GTI for 4 years now. I like it, but I miss jumping waves. So starting about 2 weeks ago I began looking for a GSX or XP.
The first one I looked at was 45 minutes away. It was a 1996 GSX, owner took it apart because it needed a new top end. Top end was replaced but never finished. Price was $400 no trailer. When I got there (45 minutes mind you), I noticed a ton of parts were missing, exhaust, motor mounts, starter, rave valves, etc.... So the guy said he will go look for the parts over his friends house and call me when he brings them back.... A day goes by and he doesn't call so I call him. Turns out after he brought the missing parts back, another guy bought it instead.
2nd one... This was an HOUR AND A HALF DRIVE to look at a 1996 XP. Pics looked good. Guy said he had a new top end put on but he did not know how to time it. (Yea, why did you pull the rotary valve to do a top end?) Anyway, I get there and the guy said he only did one cylinder (ad said "top end (FKING PEOPLE!!)). So I do a compression check, 130 and 50.... Guy wouldn't come off of the price ($650 no trailer).
3rd one.... Drove an hour to look at another 1996 GSX. Owner claims it needs a top end, low on compression, price was $400, no trailer. I get there, hook up by battery, press start button and all I hear is a nice loud knock.... Come to find out, crank is hanging out of the bottom of the case.... Well, guy was super nice, I offered him $300 because there was a lot of good parts, he accepted, loaded it up and off I went....
4th one.... Drove 30 minutes to look at a 1997 GSX, asking price was $1200, talked the guy down to $1000 over the phone. Claimed it ran just a few weeks ago but began bogging, he pulled the carbs off (grey fuel lines still). I get there and do a compression check, 150 and 150 (YAY!). Got spark, boat is in great shape, has brand new hydroturf, and comes with a nice aluminum trailer. But, VTS did not work. Guy knocked off another $200 so home with me it came. The 7.5 amp fuse was blown, it works now, but when you tilt all the way down it seems to keep going and bottoms out, does some weird stuff, Ill look into it later.
(guy also threw in about 30' of tygon fuel line, 2 brand new mikuni rebuild kits, and a sand anchor.)
