4-tec won't move and overheated

So I posted some information about the initial problems we had with the used 2004 GTX supercharged ski that we purchased.

We took it out and all was working great and then the ski had the problem where it wouldn't pump water out. It almost seems like something was sucked up into the impeller. I checked and nothing was there. When it does this I will hear a noise and vibration is coming from the back of the ski. The engine will rev up just fine during this but it just won't engage the impeller and move. I figured that the impeller and the shaft should always be spinning when it is started so I don't know why it would not move at this point.

I did look at the impeller before taking it out and it was fine as was the wear ring. The splines on the shaft to the impeller also looked fine.

So is there anything that I should look at on the shaft or is there something that can be adjusted on the clutch?

The impeller is also what cools the engine. Sounds like you wiped out the drive shaft spline. Engine is running and getting hot, no forward momentum, vibration, ect ect. I think the engine is turning but the impeller isn't spinning.

So it is possible that the impeller could have slipped off the shaft just enough to cause it to have this problem? After reading the posts on this topic I am guessing that this means a complete removal of the pump to get to the impeller. Looking at the parts for the impeller it seems like there is just a C clip that holds it on.

Unless you are missing something in the impeller area (which would explain both issues), then something is slipping. Shafts are known to go bad. But yes, if the impeller moved somehow it would also explain your issue. It could be seized bearings that cause the failure as well. I would remove the pump as no matter the issue you have to tear it open.

I did some searching for a good post on how to remove the pump but didn't find a step by step instruction on how to remove it. Is there a good one on the forum that would be recommended?

I'll take a crack at this....

remove bucket spring...
disconnect reverse cable...
disconnect opas paddles...
disconnect steering linkage...
loosen clamp on hose above pump...
remove 4 bolts/lock washers holding nozzle...
remove 4 nuts/lock/washers holding pump...

stuff some rags or sponges under shaft to keep it somewhat centered in tunnel.

you'll need.....12" 1/2" drive extension...1/2" drive wrench...I can't remember the size of the nuts holding the pump...maybe 17mm. (deep well if you got them)

you'll need a 6" 3/8" drive extension...3/8" drive wrench...I think a 1/2" socket for the nozzle.

A small set of channel locks and a 10mm 1/4" drive socket...and 1/4" drive wrench for the small stuff.

Be carefull remove the pump nuts. Keep the socket/extension/wrench in alignment with bolts. You bend those bolts and you'll regret it.
