The skis I bought have generic covers. Previous owner said he doesn’t use them when traveling because they rip to shreds.
Should I cover them when driving? If so, any recommend brands for better covers?

I always stow mine away in the storage box on the trailer when I tow. Not only can they possible tear, they can scratch up the skis. I have Covermate covers on my skis, they appear to be like oem quality and priced reasonably. I purchased one at Overton's Overton’s - Competitive Pricing for Fishing, Watersports & Boating Needs and the other on ebay, and they run from about $55 to $105 depending the size ski.

When I have to travel over the road with the skis (which is rarely), I run "naked", no covers.....traveling at 55+ up to 70+ (where limit is 65).....the covers really take a beating and to what end??? are you trying to keep the ski's dry? a errant rock hitting the ski?
IMHO, ski covers are for stationary storage situations, to protect the seats from sunburn, etc....not for travelling.
I never cover a ski or motorcycle when I'm trailering. The cover beats the hell out of the vehicle and gets ripped up in the process. You can wash off whatever gets on them when you arrive at your destination.
