Hi, I’m looking at upgrading my 97 seadoo gsx (original owner :)) for an 18 gtx 155. i put a deposit down with a private seller and it has 75 hours. when i inspected the engine bay the engine and everything in there was covered in this brown wax like coating that i could easily scratch off with my fingernails. owner (2nd owner) claims it is a waterproofing that he put on there but i’m not too sure if its true or he is pulling my leg.

Also when i tested the acceleration with the water connected, there was bit of a lag when i hit the accelerator and when the engine revved up maybe like half second. coming from a 2 stroke engine i’m used to the engine immediately revving up. can you advise if this is normal on these 4 stroke engines? thanks for your advice.

Yep that brown coating is a lanolin based waterproofing/corrosion preventative probably Fluid Film or something like it. Testing acceleration with the water connected is not telling you much, water testing is usually done in the water not on the water. You could get a completely different result with the engine under load.

cool..that does put my mind at ease...at first it just looked dirty and thought maybe it was dried up oil and maybe the engine had issues, but it didn't smell like oil/gas. i will be doing a test ride in a couple of days and hopefully throttle response won't be an issue on the water.

just wanted to update that test rode it yesterday and it was fine. tried the sport mode and throttle response was immediate. took it out today on the lake and able to hit 55 so all seems good.

i do have one question, is gas smell from the exhaust normal on these 4 stroke engines when moving at idle speed. its almost the same smell as on the 2 stroke engine from the 97 gsx. i thought these 4 stroke engines are similar to car engines and wouldn't smell of gas or at least not as much as the 2 stroke.
