2012 GTX-S 155 Rear Deck Platform Replacement

Need advice on removing and installing the handles on a replacement rear deck platform. Replacing due to broken gas strut hinge.

By trial and error, I used a thin screwdriver and pushed back one tab. The key was holding the handle "open" so they would come out cleanly. Installing was a cinch, but again the key was holding the handle the "open" position. The hinge for the gas tube on one side appears to be prone to breaking off from a poor design. Looking for a way to reinforce it -- any ideas???
