2008 GTi- How to view fault codes

Hey guys,
I'm trouble shooting a 2008 GTi SE for what might be limp mode?
Its not going over 3.5k and sits almost exactly at that rpm. Is this limp mode?
I am trying to read the fault code without a scanner, but this model didn't come with a Set button...
Is there any other way to read them??
I have order new coil / plugs as one of them is practically seized in place (trying again to remove tomorrow)
