so I am helping a neighbor with his ski. started out with a busted front cowl that the dealer said they could not fix. I fixed it with epoxy and pop rivets but then the thing wouldn't start. been sitting in a boathouse for couple months after running fine. no beeps, no clicks, no nothing. charged the one year old battery. still nothing and the battery has 12.6v. I told him to take it back to the dealer. they told him it needed a dess post but the part was NLA. I got him an aftermarket post off ebay, he takes it to the dealer, they install it, charge him $800 and it still won't start. the dealer says it is PROBABLY a bad ecu and they don't want to work on it anymore because it's too old. so now it is in my workshop. I have cleaned all the grounds, taken apart/cleaned all the electrical plugs I can. bench tested the solenoid and the relay (good). shorted the solenoid terminals and the engine cranks great. tested all fuses with a multimeter. inspected the back of the fuse panel. removed/cleaned the battery cables. swapped in a different battery. the old dess post tests the same as the new one (resistance per the shop manual). the starter switch tests good and I can hear the fuel pump come on and shut off as it should. what I get now with the key on the post is one long beep and no crank. the dash seems to come on but is very dim (the owner says it always did that)
I don't know much about jet skis but have worked on a lot of cars/boats/motorcycles and at this point it seems crazy to throw $1000 at an ecu for a $2000 machine. Is that where I am at now?
thanks
Randy

It will never start until you get 2 beeps when you put the key on. One beep means something is wrong. Did anyone try to jump start the ski?

Could be 100 things, from very simple like a poor battery or ground connection at the front of the motor to ECU lost its key program to a bad ECU. I would connect BUDS and go from there but the fuel pump coming on with a single long beep is not looking good for the ECU.

That's a world record high cost for installing a DESS post. The proper way is to unplug and test the new post which takes 5 minutes before you install which should take less than an hour even if you're swapping the whole harness. Not sure how dealers live themselves.

thanks for the reply. there has been no jump starting. I think I have eliminated a bad battery or poor grounds. to connect BUDS means going back to the dealer @$180/hr and these are the guys who have said they don't want to work on it at all.

anybody use seadoodesskeyprogramming.com? it looks like for $90 I will either have a good clear ECU back or know that mine is toasted.

Yes I have used Jim a few times for various programing on my ski and boat. He is good, and has a pretty quick turnaround.
