So I was planning to buy this ski from a friend and while testing it for a few days, it began to show some severe signs of a bad head gasket. High temp alarm was popping on and off, coolant flushing, and occasional white smoke. It has 140 hours approx and a rebuilt SC around 30 hours ago. I'm trying to gather my options here and need some advice. First off I would be paying 1000$ for the ski and want to stay under 4k all said and done. 3k to work with. I have a feeling once this engine is cracked open, it will be more then just a head gasket job. Has anyone not seen head warping once a head gasket goes? Not sure what the block would look like either. So my options are to have it rebuilt which would most likely include a new head, gasket kit, and all the other nooks or I am considering dropping the money on a new or reman. engine for 3k? I need some help with the best route to go. I would install the engine myself If I buy a refrurbed; also I have no knowledge of a reputable seadoo service or repair shop around me. Ideas appreciated.

Fyi,, the 4-tec engine, 2003 to mid 2006 has Sodium filled exhaust valves. These are known to fail Especially in salt water skis/boats and those with Super Chargers.

So,,, you need to consider this. when you pull the head, these valves need replaced with solid core valves. If one fails, it can do SERIOUS damage.

$1000 for the ski is a great price as long as you are looking at only a head gasket and exhaust valve replacement.

Head gaskets are not a normal failure for these engines. If you go for it, take it to a shop and let them check it for level.
