2004 GTX hooking up

Status

I have a 2004 GTX with about 230 hours on it. The wear ring and impeller were replaced earlier this summer by previous owner. I have receipt from dealer.

My issue is, when I go to get on plane, it reeves and doesn't feel like it is hooking up with the water. If I am by myself and gingerly get on plane it is ok. But, if I have two adults on it I have to get on it to get going. Not sure if the impeller is the wrong kind or what. I looked on the receipt and it just says changed impeller with out saying the make and model. Is there a way to tell what impeller is on the ski just be looking?

Thanks for the help!

Jeff

Check the carbon seal (CS). Do you get water into the hull or can you see water running in at the CS?

I don't think I do, if any it is really minimal. If I open the drains in the back, I get a very little out of them. Where is the carbon seal? Is that on the exhaust?

The collar is in purple and the seal is to the left. It is suppose to dribble a small amount of water as that is how it cools itself, (which is why you should never run for more than a minute when out of the water using a hose or not).

The Carbon seal is on the drive shaft where it goes through the hull towards the impeller/pump.

Edit: OOPS, posted same time Coastie did, His pic is a much better reply.

Thanks guys. I see the carbon ring now. The bellow looks good and I don't see any rips. What should I look for? Not sure how long these last. I don't think it had ever been replaced.

On another note I took off the hose that feeds the front of the sc. I notice some oil I. There. Is that normal? I had an issue earlier this year where I had an o ring on the oil cap go bad. That allowed oil to leak out. Not sure if that is just remnants of that issue or not.

As I recall there is a breather tube that comes from the front of the engine to the front of the air intake tube. If you were getting excess pressure or blow by... the oil in your sc intake could come from that.

As for the carbon seal. its not the bellows you need to look at. It is the black carbon seal just behind the silver collar. check it out when in the water for leakage of water into the hull. This seal can also allow air from the hull to go into the water intake for the pump and cause cavitation.

is this the non SC model, ?

if it is, actually taking a bit to get up and going isn't a big surprise, I have a 04 gtx non SC and its pretty much a pig from 0-50, but I can't say that I was disappointed, I kind of knew that going in.

I must ask, what is "Reeves" ?

do you mean Revs ? as in cavitation ?

and your sure the wear ring is in good shape ? (a receipt is nice but a visual inspection is needed)

It is a sc model. I did do a visual but it looks good from what I can tell. Is the carbon seal like a friction plate on an automobile? This is my first ski and trying to figure all the parts out.

Usually only two things would do that:

1. Wear ring with wrong size/gap (most common) - check the gap
2. The carbon seal like folks said above
