2004 GTX 4 stroke Starter Gear

I took my starter off and sent it back to SBT since it wasn't working, they sent me a new one under my warranty. They also told me I left a gear on my old one when I sent it back, so they sent it back to me with the new starter. My question is the gear just slides on the shaft of the starter and there is nothing holding it in place. Should there be some kind of clip or something to hold this gear on?

I just found a microfiche picture of the starter and there is a retaining ring that holds the gear on. SBT didnt send mine back, and it is Friday night. Planning on going out on the lake tomorrow. Guess not.
