So, since I've fixed 99% of everything else on my XP after the previous owner beat the crap out of it...

The speedo.

The one on my GTX works great. it's 3 MPH off at 55 MPH and I can live w/that. (GPS tested).

the one on my XP, anything above 30 MPH and it flaps around from 40-50 sometimes 50-60, and wide open it just rolls around and often past 70 (from 2 WOT runs up/down river I averaged 65.5 on the GPS).

SO. the wheel spins fine, and the guage reads that, and I assume the MPEM is in the middle.

do I replace the pickup wheel sensor? Do I replace the guage?

thanks!

C'mon guys (and girls) where do I look first for a problem?

also what size is the guage? 3.5 or 4"? I found a $300 GPS speedometer that just goes in, but it's 3.5"

Almost always, it's the speed sensor that fails. If your gauge is acting eratically, it's because the signal from the speed sensor is bad and will most likely soon completely go out. As long as the gauges don't get moisture in them, they are very reliable. The speed sensors fail constantly and sounds like your problem.

Yes, there are only 2 main components of the system that fail, the gauge and the speed sensor but have seen a couple bad MPEMs that wouldn't let the speed signal work correctly.

So replace the sensor or the paddle wheel? how hard is that to do? it doesn't just connect on the back, you have to really get down in there?

Looks like the speed sensor is a $110 part + shipping, how hard are they to replace? I don't want water to leak where it plugs into the hull, or is the connector outside the hull?

easy to change, the new speed sensor will have a new paddle wheel with it, not hard to change, just 6 screws attached to your ride plate and a thru hull fitting.
