The alignment fixture is a tool that bolts onto the transom with an alignment shaft that slides through into the engine crankshaft PTO spline once the engine is properly positioned. Using the tool to check alignment, adjust the engine position using shims until the shaft aligns. Otherwise the drive shaft coupling splines will wear quickly or vibrate, may cause rapid wear to the jet pump.

The details of special tools and fixtures can be found in your BRP service manual.

Cranking - Yes, cranking the engine is the recommended way to clear trapped fluid from the crankcase.
 
after you retest the compression and if it is low you can remove the head and get a good idea of the cylinder condition. you ask if your ski is worth a rebuild if worst comes to worse? that depends if you plan on keeping it. but yea if the rest of the ski is in good condition go for it, sure you may have more into it than buying a running ski but that in itself is a crap shoot. this way you will know what you have. i'm in the same situation, i bought my gsx rfi knowing i would have to do a rebuild and checking everything out as i go. im even replacing the fuel pump and other parts just so i know i will be good to go for the long haul hoping i dont have any down time this summer. some here may question why i will end up in investing 3 grand in an older ski but thats ok, i knew what i wanted, they are very hard to come by in my part of the country, i will have touched every part of my ski and plan on keeping it for a very long time.

Ok, I think I got the nastiness out of the back cyl...... I did a compression test with a new gauge.......
dun..da..dun..... well not good..... front cyl is about 105, rear cyl is 150..... so I assume that is a bad cyl in the front.
So what do I do next...... is this something that I can do with the engine in the ski?

jammin777, I appreciate you response as to the worth of the ski, that makes total sense to me..... I think I will proceed with fixing the one I have..... 173 hrs..... is that a lot?

any signs of water that came out of the cylinder? if it were me i would go for a reman or rebuild. i had mine done a ses (seadoo engine shop)
premium build with 2 year no fault warranty. it took 2 mo to get it back which is no biggie for me as it is the off season. someone eles will chime in to give you more advise. a well taken care of 787 can last up to 3 to 400 hrs.

You might get away with some top end work assuming the bottom end never lets go. If/when the bottom end lets go, normally it will send shrapnel through the top end, destroying it.
 
There was definitely a mixture of oil and water coming from the back cyl..... Once I cleared it the compression was good on that one, but the front cyl had only 105 or so.......I want to fix it right, and have no issues in the foreseeable future. I would rather pay a little more now than have a breakdown on the water.......Ok.... so where do I get a new motor???
SBT? or anyone on here have any ideas????
