2002 GTX 4TEC tops will not activate. no click no nothing.
put dess key on and nothing. pulled it off and bench tested it with ohm meter and also put 12v to it and works on bench. checked all wires and connections.
think I may have a bad ecm or wrong ecm. hooked candoopro up and getting these codes
p0513
p0344
p1200
p1680

1 is your tops (344, blow by valve), rest is mpem, comm error, no dess reading etc.. What comes back when you reset these? A lot of times dess errors etc can be old. Don't know if candoo shows _when_ they were activated like buds does.

Anything else not coming on or just the valve? (IE is fuel pump, power relay etc etc coming on?) Since it works but you're getting the error for it, that would suggest the leads to it are shorted or open, mpem doesn't actually know if valve moved, just knows if the circuit looks right.

I replaced ecu and mpem and now TOPS works when key is put on post. Was also getting communication problems with mpem. Tps fault, communication problem with cluster. Fault codes were all over the place. Every time i cleared them and wrote to mpem then refreshed codes i would get a different code but p1200 was always there (TOPS fault)
Replaced both ecu and mpem and everything is back to normal.
My customer just basically bought someone elses headache. Hull was full of oil and water , water in oil, blown out pto seal which required mento pull engine because the floating ring that goes against the carbon ring was rusted in place so couldnt pull shaft out through back of hull. Valve cover was also leaking oil into spark plug wells. Good solid engine to with compression at 180psi per cylinder.

There is a sticky on this forum that lists many fault codes and includes a description.

According to that post:

513 is for your D.E.S.S. key (the ECU didn't recognize it.)
344 is a bad cam sensor; check your wires from the sensor to the ECU. I had to replace one of those last summer. $6.00 on Ebay!
1200 is your T.O.P.S. (blow by valve); sounds like you've fixed that.
1680 is a communications issue with the MPEM; I get it all the time on both of my '02s. Shop manual says the the information center can't process the information as fast as the MPEM would like, and the MPEM gets angry. That's a paraphrase of course. The clip below is for fault 1681, but both 1680 and 1681 are comm issues.

I replaced the just ecu and was still getting some faults. replaced just the mpem and same thing. replace them as a pair and all is good in the world again...EVERYTHING works as it should and no faults at all...
and I hate it when the mpem gets angry....lol
