2002 GTI LE fuel filter

Are these filters meant to be replaced or just cleaned out and re-inserted? I think I remember hearing that they are to just be cleaned out unless they are torn or messed up but I wanted to double check. It's getting close to time to hit the water again so I'm asking now before the spring frenzy hits!

On a car, a fuel filter should be changed every 20 000 km. It must be something similar with a PWC, but in ''hours'' of use in the stead of kilometers. I am not an expert, but my guess is that a filter (no mater on what it is installed) needs to be changed once in a while, yes.

clean the fuel filter with carb cleaner and re-install. Only thing that goes bad is the o-ring up top of cannister.
