Hey everyone, first time visiting and posting to this site. Just bought a used 2001 XP and have riden at most 6 hours. Last night rode for about 45 minutes decided to take off across the lake, went about 3/4 of a mile wide open and she went down. Hole in the piston on the rear cylinder. Had the the dealer open it up this morning said there was water in the motor.

Last weekend I let some kids play on the ski and they had it on its side many times but never rolled completely over, they were just playing with it not riding it. Had a very hard time getting it to run right after that, pulled plugs cranked over and some water came out not a bunch though.

Any thoughts on why this would burn up a piston or is there something else wrong with the ski??

Thanks a ton

Nope... the water wouldn't have caused that issue.

The melted piston is from running lean. Chances are... it was sitting before you bought it, and the carbs needed a good cleaning.

Also, if you look around, you will see threads on the gray "Tempo" fuel lines. They decay, and plug up the carbs. Does your ski still have the gray hoses?

Sorry for the misfortune.

You can lookup "detonation" on line and see pictures of what happens when run lean for any length of time. I have been told by a Seadoo mechanic that you should back off from WOT after less than a minute, to give the motor time to cool down before making another run. Or it could be from running regular 85 octane fuel, if your Doo was designed for 91 octane. This is a definite problem on my '01 GTX DI if the knock sensor doesn't recognize the lower octane and re-adjust the timing.
