2001 gtx starter issues

Ok so my buddy was out late riding my other gtx late yesterday after I had hit the snooze button. Went to start it and I got the click. I checked the battery and the negative on it was melted quite a bit and loose. Tightened. Heard beeps. But got the click. Changed battery same. Changed to the know good solenoid same. But when I fidget with the negative wire that’s on it it beeps? Bad ground? Got melted up a bit? Starter?

We had ran it alllll day with no issues. So was a surprise to wake up to. And haven’t been able to figure it out

Also Engine turned just fine by hand and was clear.

Sounds like a bad ground cable.

The heat that melted it was caused by high resistance from either the connection or cable itself.

They tend to corrode from the inside out and can appear to look ok.
