New PWC owner here! I bought a 2000 Sea-Doo GTI, took it out yesterday and the oil light was on and smoke coming from the exhaust. I put oil in, almost a whole gallon. Rode around for a couple hrs, seems to be running right, but at idle it smokes pretty bad and when I put it on the trailer I noticed oil in the water. When I checked the oil after, it seems to be pretty low. Also, after riding there was a little oil on the bottom of the engine compartment. I know nothing about working on these. What could be wrong?

Check the oil line at the bottom isn’t split at the hose barb from a clip pulling too tight or a cracked line. I had this after tightening down the jubilee clip which had a casting defect on it and it started to cut through the hose.

If it’s burning too much oil you’ll know by checking your plugs. Dark or wet and it’s too much oil. Dry and light sand colour and it’s too little. If in any doubt post pics here.

Grab the manual and check the oil pump is adjusted correctly.

Unless it’s been done recently, a new OEM Mikuni carb gasket set is always worthwhile doing. On a 2000 gti you only have one carb to worry about.

Other thing it could be is leaking crank seals. If this is the case you’ll need the crank rebuilding.

If it were me, I’d check the basics and keep riding it for the remainder of the summer. You’ve then got plenty of time to tinker with the motor on the dark nights of winter.

717s are pretty bulletproof once sorted [emoji4]

717 has to be the most bullet proof engine Rotax ever made for sure. If you're adding oil to the fuel + the oil tank, this makes a lot of smoke too. Doesn't sound like you're doing that.

Most likely your oil pump control cable is broken or misaligned, or the return spring on the oil pump control lever has broken. If this failure happens, you get full oil constantly and yes, it's gonna smoke.

Also check for leaks around and from the oil tank, several dry paper towels strategically placed under the suspected fitting and tubing locations might help you locate an oil drip. The oil can run down the outside of the tubing from a fitting leak point and make it look like the tubing has a hole in it, just remember this can happen and not be mislead. Many skis have a rubber grommet where the tank fitting nipple is pushed into and the grommet can be rotten, allowing a leak. Sometimes the tank seams (the rotocast parting lines) develop leaks.

The oil is very thin and slippery, a tiny leak makes a big mess.

Thanks so much for the info! I had planned on checking it out today but it is pouring rain. Hopefully I can take a look soon.

I plan on taking it out today. I lifted the seat and there's oil in the bottom. The oil tank isnt empty though. 20190622_102326.jpg20190622_102358.jpg20190622_102608.jpg20190622_102816.jpg20190622_102332.jpg I took a few pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.

It’s the oil tank seam. Either replace the tank with a new one or you can try to repair it.

Correct. The new tanks are $100 and will usually last at least 5 years so at $20 a year I just replace them.

If you’re being really frugal and trying not to spend money, you could run a soldering iron round the seam with a flat tip on the iron.

Go slow and make sure you’re sealing it neatly.

Personally I’d just replace the tank, but thought I’d mention that there are alternatives...

Same problem but mine appears to be leaking from where the hose attaches to the bottom of the tank. Are those hose connectors typically part of a new tank or a separate part?

Cleaning question, after soaking up all the leaked oil that I can, can I spray the hull area down with something like simple green and then flush it all out or is there a better way to clean this mess. Sorry new guy questions.

Could also be the grommets, mine tank was leaking there and new grommets fixed it.

Mine had the same issue and it turned out the actual nylon nipple was cracked. Some over-eager rocket scientist put the hose clamp on with the force of god behind him. I had to cut it off with a small cut off wheel. The genius used a mild steel clamp.

Needles to say when I did my full rebuild (it’s on here somewhere) I replaced every bit of hardware with stainless. As it should be!
