1999 xpl no spark

Riding at the camp with the kids and machine has been working great all summer, today it just quit while one of the kids were riding and would not restart. I brought it and checked plugs which were wet put in new plugs and still would not start. Checked with plug grounded to engine and no spark. I do not have access to another mpem to give it a try. Any ideas on some tests I could run to see what might be causing the problem?

I've seen some posts about multiple grounds but nothing about their locations, can anyone tell me where exactly to check these ground wires

First, easy simple thing to try. Especially if it has never been done on your 1999 model. Unscrew Boots off of the spark plug wires. Trim back 1/4” and screw the boots back in. Check for spark.

Then, check all your connections in the rear electrical box.

I am still at the lake today. I will cut the wires and give it a try, just seems hard to believe both would fail instantly at the same time like that but thank u for your help I will post my findings

Ok. So I cut back both plug wires 1/4" and reattached but still no spark. Anymore ideas?

Check all electrical connections. Not just for connection but the condition of the terminals.

Checked all connections and all seem good. No corrosion to speak of. I did pull the plug out of flony of mag cover and measure trigger coil resistance and was 240. Right in where it should be. Coils tested good as well.

Machine turns over fine. Just wont fire.

Ok. So also found the other 3 ground wires inside the ignition coil box. No change. Verified the ground is good. At a loss where to go next???

I had seen on another post that if the dess beeps twice and the engine turns over it's not the mpem, can anyone verify if this is the case for a 99 xp

I think two beeps only means the mpem recognizes the dess. There could still be an issue with the MPEM, stator, trigger, etc. you will need to go through and test the ignition components according to the manual.

Well finally made it back to the camp ti work on machine and found the the problem... it was the trigger coil. I had tested voltage of trigger coil and it tested fine but when I actually took the front magneto cover off the coil fell apart inside. I just wanted to post my findings for anyway else who may have same troubles and to say thank u to JJinSC for your help.
As u can see in the pic the trigger coil actually broke away from the mount. All in all an easy fix. Now to track down a trigger coil!

Same thing happened to me earlier this week

Glad you found the problem. It is always easier when there is visual evidence. I had to run a stator issue down on my Yamaha outboard last year and there was no visual evidence of an issue. It even passed most of the subscribed test, but failed under load.
