Just bought a 1998 GSX limited. The VTS was not working. I found that the fuse was blown. I removed the motor and verified that it works in both directions. Using a voltmeter on the wires going to the vts motor from the vts box, I get voltage when i hit the up switch, but not the down switch. The VTS part of the info gauge does move either, when i manually move the nozzle up or down, the gauge does not move. Any recommendations? thanks everyone.

the VTS control has burnt out. It's in the housing, and not really serviceable. If you want to get creative, you can cut the potting away, and get to the board.

That's kind of what I was thinking, that one of the limit switches is stuck. There is no normal way to fix this?

Isn't it possible it is just the switch?

another easy way to repair is wire up a 451 relay (purchased from best buy install garage for 10 bucks) it bypasses the factory board and works great just like factory. I replaced the factory 10amp fuse with a 10amp circuit breaker i bought from napa part number 782-3010 and when you hit your max travel it pops the circuit breaker and then pops back on to lower or raise it.

here is the wiring for the 451m relay to seadoo's wiring for the vts...

Relay Seadoo

Blue/Black Green/Orange (VTS Motor)
Brown/Black Black (Ground)
Violet/Black (fused) Red (power)
Green/Black Blue/Orange (VTS Motor)
White/Black Black (Ground)
(Small Wires)
Red Purple (VTS switches)
Blue Blue/White (VTS switches)
Green Green/white (VTS switches)

If your 451m relay has a solid voilet wire, it is not used.

Keep the brown wires hooked to the VTS module in order to keep your gauge working. Its that simple, I used bullet connectors. i siliconed the relay so water couldn't penetrate it.

scott, im new to this so bear with me. Can more in the module be bad than just the limit switches? Mine I think moves in the up direction, at least it has voltage to the motor wires. So im guessing the down limit is stuck. Would this be the only part bad or could it be more? Im not sure what parts normally go bad in them. So if I have more stuff broke in the module, will your fix (the relay) fix everything?

also, my gauge isnt working either, its part of the info gauge, but im guessing its controlled from the module, not outputting its location to the gauge. It shows it all the way down right now.

Minnetonka, how much for a new one?

are very many of them interchangeable? I see that there is many different part numbers, I wanted to try the one thats in my 97 gsx, but its a different part number.

There are ways to fix it... but that board has the control for the gauge, and the end stops. If you wire the motor to relays... it's going to bind at the ends, and blow the fuse.

Talk to Minnitonka, and get his good used housing.

They are all the same, but there are 3 different wiring harnesses; 1 for 95xp/96spx, 1 for 96xp, 97-99SPX, then the 3rd (what you have) fits everything else...GSX, GSXL, RX, 97xp, XPLs, RXP, etc.

I cut the first two harnesses off when I have a bad one, then when someone orders say one for a 95XP, I put OEM connectors on the cut off harness so it plugs right into the GSX style housing. A good 95 housing is pretty hard to find, but the "newer" style is a dime a dozen.

LOL so in short the 97 one will plug and play.

I get $140 shipped for a good used one.

is there a for sure way to test the switches? I work in the electronics field, and I am assuming if you ohm out the switches, all the switches should be open when not being touched, once pressed you should get some ohm reading. Anyone tested these?

looking on ebay, most the switches have a connector attached to them. Both of my skis, the switches are directly wired into the harnesss going into the mpem. Anyone know if this is how they are supposed to be?

thanks

i got mine from minnetonka4me and it was a good buy. I had the same issue with my 96spx
i tried to get into the potting compound but its really tough..i ended up knicking the side of the circuit board and i knew it was done for
