I have a coupler I am trying to remove from a 787 out of a 1997 XP, what do you use to get this coupler off? Please note that this is a good engine and I don't want to damage it. Thanks for your help.

That side still threads on like any other PTO.

You can put some rope in the PTO spark-plug hole to hold the piston... and then you just twist the PTO off the crank.

The PTO can be very tight... an it can be very hard to do it, if the engine isn't bolted down.

Now when you say the pto spark plug hole I am guessing that's a typo and you meant put rope in the spark plug hole. While using this method, where do you set the piston before inserting the rope, all the way down half way up? How much safer is this than using the seadoo tool that screws into the sparkplug treads?

Also, looking at the picture, does the spline part of the pto/coupler come off first? Or do I just grab on the larger diameter/thinner portion closer to the crank case?

Nope... that wasn't a typo. The "PTO" spark plug hole is referring to the cyl on the PTO side. So... your engine has a PTO, and a MAG cyl.

You want the piston to be just high enough to cover the ports. Then... feed rope into the spark plug hole to fill most of the chamber. Then, when you start to twist the PTO... the crank will be held with nice soft rope. (won't cause damage)

If you hold the MAG on a good engine... there is a chance that you will twist the crank, and make it out of time.

That should be all one piece... but to be safe... start with the small coupler end. (Looks like someone used a big pipe wrench on it already)

Have you tried or heard of the tool that locks the fly wheel? Just a little uneasy about putting that much force on the engine internals.

go back and read post #4

That is a big ol' never mind. I just took a look at the engine and realized what you meant. Thanks for your help. I'll be bringing home on of the 4 ft pipe wrenches from work tonight and knocking this out.

Where exactly would you concentrate the heat from a torch? Thanks again.

f you have a good heat gun... it's a little safer than a torch. BUT... either way... you just want to heat the hub of the PTO. You want that to expand it away from the crank. It will also break any thread locker than may be in there.

Yell if you have any more Q's.

Here's one more... How do you anchor the motor down to take the pto off?

Well I'll post what I did for research purposes.

I used a rear engine support and a piece of angle iron to prevent the motor from rotating and then used a 36" pipe wrench to turn it off. I should note that I used a spare rear motor mount that I did not care about bending because it did bend a little.

Hey Blake, how are you doing?

Doing well Bruce...

Just trying to do some research on the 97 XP.

Hope you are doing well.

Dropped off the drawbar on Friday night. I assume you got it.

Thanks again. Well have to hook up soon. I may need your help reinstalling an engine in the XP...LOL

If you have any questions le me know, I am fairly sure I know exactly what it takes o get it running. I do have the coupler you'll need so let me know and I'll have it ready.

Thanks for dropping my hitch off.
