How the hell do you get this pto off the crank? I heated it up and put a screw drive into the coupler tips and it would only spin just not off the threads? I was thinking maybe take the coupler from the axle and use the impeller tool would this be the correct method? if I do this but it just spins free without even moving the crankshaft.

the PTO is threaded onto the crank. If it's spinning, then it would fall off.

If it's not the PTO, please post a pic.

I know it is threaded but what I mean is that with a regular PTO wheel you can use the impeller tool and heat with a breaker bar to get them off. But with the 1997 it had a coupler style PTO and after I heated it up really good and soaked it with PB blaster It would only just turn (coupler) not pto as I thought this coupler was fixed to the wheel itself.

Here is a ebay auction of the exact PTO I am having issues with: item number 310370173521

Thanks for the fast response.

Seems that when its heated the coupler part rotates from expanding and I need to do it cold. The correct advice I got if anyone else is having problems is to use a chain wrench on the larger skinny wheel behind it to remove this unit going in a counter clockwise direction.

I've never used the Impeller removal tool for doing this. I use a pipe wrench, wedged with a rag. If you get a good bite the first time, you won't scar the metal.

Before attempting to remove it, I take out the spark plug and fill the hole with a small (1/4") hemp line, with the cylinder in the down position. Then, rotate the crank until the cylinder is wedged up tight agains't the rope. This will lock the crank from turning while you loosen the PTO with the pipe wrench.

The 1997 XP pto is not like that other units which do come off easy with the method you explain or with an impeller tool. I use rope to stop the piston, or 2 stroke oil to hydro-lock. These 1997 models need you to take a chain wrench on the coupler not on the fingers, I am not sure if the hx has this type of pto also. This is what the PTO looks like Snipe it took me a bit of time to figure it out, thanks for the responses.
