1997 gtx Water intake question.

I just want to understand how the water system works in my 1997 gtx. I bought this one from a friend just about a month ago. I had to rebuild the motor. I was just wondering how the water cooling system works. I see how to connect the garden hose to the adapter underneath by the jet pump. I also see how that line runs straight to the head. Right beside that line is another line coming off the head and exits the rear. I also see the short hose that goes from the mag side of the head to the exhaust. Ok, how does this system work when not hooked up to the garden hose. I know this sounds dumb but I'm just not understanding how the head is getting water without being hooked up to the garden hose.

the water get'n forced thru the line from the pump assy. That force then, pushes the water, all over the place...lack of better terms.
