1997 GTI won’t accelerate without choke

I have a 1997 GTI, runs good out of the water but won’t accelerate in the water. I can hold the choke out 1/3 of the way and it will run all day. Compression on both cylinders are 120. Any advice on where to check next.

Sounds like it’s sucking air from somewhere, maybe carb gaskets, fuel system or crank seals

I found a carb setting spec sheet, showing 1 for low and 1 1/2 for high. I believe mine is set at 1 3/4 low and 0 high. Would that help any?

It could. It would give it more fuel

It helped some, I think it needs the carb rebuilt.

Could very well need the carb rebuilt, you could vacuum test or replace the selector valve and fuel filter o ring first. Also keep in mind that 120 pounds is getting very tired although that shouldn’t stop it from running correctly, just hard to start a specially in the water.
