Hello,
Just bought a 1997 GTI Sea Doo and it would not start. The previous owner said the starter was bad. Replaced the starter and also the coil. New plugs, new oil, and gas. Sometimes getting a spark and sometimes not. It wants to run but will not.

Please give me suggestions to check want to take to Cumberland this weekend and today is the last day to work on it.
Also, do any of you know of a place in Cincinnati Ohio that sells parts for these Sea Doos? I have a 1997 and 1996 GTI

HELP

OSDparts.com is in "Central Ohio". I don't know if they have a Will Call service or not.

I normally buy my parts from them online. So maybe call them first before heading out.

We have never had Sea Doos before so I am not sure about "The Grounds". Can you enlighten me about those and where they are located?
Any other suggestions as well would be greatly appreciated...
We have checked all fuses on the coil for sure though.

Hello,
Not sure where "The Grounds" are or what you are even talking about. If you could tell me where to find those and how to check them that would be great.
We have never had Sea Doos before so we are going at this blindly.
My husband is very very mechanically inclined and has built several car engines from the ground up as well as worked on many motor cycles and rail buggies too. So he may know what you are talking about as far as "The Grounds" go but I am going to be the one relaying your information to him. So be detailed PLEASE!

Yes, my husband looked at all the grounds he said. My husband was spraying ether into the engine as well. Wanted to start but would not.

Ground point is located where the coil is Grounded to. There should be a long screw with about 8 black wires with terminal ring connectors attached to it.

The other spot is the 4 pin connector that plugs into the magneto cover for the flywheel.

I strongly suggest downloading the Shop manual for your year/make/model to better help understand the systems/subsystems on your model.

Cliff 787,
I spoke with my husband and he did check the grounds.
He does have the shop manual and has read it.
I am just personally checking with other Sea Doo people for suggestions.
Just in case he has not thought of something.

If you have any other ideas if it is not the grounds I would greatly appreciate your advice.

Ether has no lubricating properties in it.

Using it would cause metal to metal scraping from the piston rings against the cylinder walls as the crankshaft turns from attempting to start the engine and can cause loss of compression or internal engine damage.

Premix is oil mixed with gasoline and provides the "film" or "buffer" between the metal parts that ether cannot provide.

Most common

Okay. Well, thank you for your suggestions. Have a great day Cliff787

there should be a female spade connector going to the coil I believe inside the black box where your starter solenoid and coil are. check connections are clean there and tight. look at grounds on the coil in that box. other common reasons are a shared flywheel key, water and corrosion in your stator housing, your kill switch may be faulty, the coil may be faulty or the mpem module may be going bad. you can test the kill switch by unplugging and putting power right to starter to start. almost impossible to test mpem and as far as the coil, you can ohm test but I cannot remember specs. manuals can be found online for free.

Do they take a special kind of spark plug?

Spark plugs

should be typical ngk br8es

Thank you so much for your ideas
We have tried them all. It is sometimes getting spark and sometimes not. We have changed plugs several times checked grounds checked kill switch and the others you said. It just seems to not want to run!
New coil and starter too.
Guess no Sea Doo at Cumberland this weekend for me

there is a guy I used to send work to in cinci that is fantastic with seado.. he often can be found on craigslist. there is also Pandora there which can be easily found. another simple easy and often problematic idea is pull off your spark plug boots and cut the wire back 1/4" and rescrew back on. if it is still intermittent more than likely you have a bad mpem

Schmu426...

To your knowledge. Was the MPEM ever replaced before you bought it?

Not that I know of. The man I bought it from had it running on August 11th up in Michigan he said. He told me when I bought it that it needed a starter. I have replaced the starter, coil, new plugs, cleaned all contacts. My husband is thinking the fly wheel key or the MPEM. We just got them a week ago and have been waiting on parts. Finally got the starter and coil put those it and nothing. It is getting spark but will not start. I called the previous owner and he said that it was running fine for him.... I just do not know what to do. I wanted to take it to Cumberland today but guess that is not happening. Is there a quick check I can do to see if the MPEM is bad? Any other things you can think of to check would be greatly appreciated.
