I have been reading a lot of great stuff on this site, but I have not seen anything like my problem. I have a 1997 Seadoo GSX with a compression and smoking problem. When I check the compression, one cylinder reaches 150 by the 2nd compression stroke. The other takes 3 compressions to reach 150. They both hit 150 or about the same number, as I have read they need to be with in 2% of each other. The "slow" cylinder also spits a little oil when both spark plugs are removed for this test. This ski is hard to start, and when it does, its smokes a lot. I have not cleaned the raves yet, but I pulled the caps, and both move freely. Can a rave cause "slow" compression?

Welcome,

With the smoke... there is a lot of extra oil in the engine. So, it's going to be hard to get a real compression number. (The RAVE's won't cause compression issues)

I would check to make sure the cable on the oil pump is adjusted properly, and functioning. If it is... go out and ride the ski for 5 or 10 minutes to burn out all the extra oil. Then check the compression again after it's cooled down a little.

Yes it can. This problem can be averted with annual maintenance and an up-grade to slotted raves. Search the How-to section, and the
similiar threads on the lower left of this page.
