hey guys, i picked up a 97 challenger single 787cc cheap over the weekend on one of my cl runs, and i got it home, got the starter to finally run, and got a new battery, well i ran a comp test and i got 30 in the front, and 155 in the rear. Im guessing that im going to need to rebuild, but what should i get, just a top end kit? i was thinking of taking the motor out this weekend and tearing into it. Ive rebuilt a couple superjet motors before, so i'll do it myself. What else could cause the motor to be so low? I did get the motor to start for a little bit and run, maybe 20 secs or so. thanks for your help!

"What would cause the engine to be so low?"

It's a 14 year old 2-stroke engine. It lived it's life.

The choice to do a top end, or an entire engine is up to you. If you are keeping it for yourself... then do a full engine rebuild. Even if the crank bearings seem OK... they have a lot of years, and time on them. Also... whatever is wrong with the topend... it probably sent small bits of melted aluminum down into the bearings. So... you can do a top end... be the crank may fail soon after.

I thought I recognized your screen name..
Congrats on the boat.
The guys on the Florida pwc forum are going to be disappointed :)

Like dr said you're going to need that top end but if engine is going to be out a full build would be better to be safe...

lol OCOD, im still going to keep the yamaha vx, but the superjet is for sale at the moment. So i'll still ride with the guys!

I actually took the motor out of the boat a little while ago and took the head off. The rave valve got chewed up pretty nicely, and hit the piston ring, snapped the ring and sent metal everywhere. The metal parts from the ring also got into the other side of the motor, so i think i would be better off just sending it to sbt and getting a reman. I would rebuilt it myself, but with all the cost of new crank, top end kit, bore, seals and new rave valve assemble..i think i would be better off justgoing to go sbt, just because the warranty. Its always nice to have that no fault warrranty. Does anyone know if their motors come with the rave valves?
