1997 Challenger 1800

I'm looking at buying a 1997 Challenger 1800 twin 110. Just wandering what it's like on fuel? I will mostly be crusing and taking the kids on the tube ect. Also how fast or these units. I've had Seadoo PWC's GTX 110ho and GTX 130hp. Any info would be great!

It depends on how you use it. Has the potential to be a major gas pig. My 16 ft boat has the same 2 engines and I can go through 30 gallon in a couple hours. Of course I like to go fast. You can also make it last all day. Just depends on how you use it. I would expect top speed to be 50-53

Thanks RFoster130,
I 've only seen the boat online on the dealers website. Do you know if the twin engine boats have 2 oil reservoirs? Are they hard on fuel! My concern is two engines = twice the oil, twice gas, twice maintenance.

Its a single oil tank. IT just goes through it quicker..lol. 2 engines do cost more. These can be a real gas guzzler. It just depends on how you use it. It does cost more in oil, gas and maintenance. But the trade off is more speed which is more fun.

I really wonder what the GPH usage is of the twin Rotax 1800 Challenger compared to that of a boat equipped with a V8 with the same performance.

I would bet it is less, BUT in my opinion, you wont get the same performance out of a V8. I have friends who have spent 50 grand on a boat that I can run circles around. Literally. I have been able to keep up with their boats and drive around them in tight circles at 50 mph. Do that in a baja. :p

Just to clarify, you think that the challenger would use less or more fuel?

I would say the other boat uses less. The challenger will use more. But like I have said, it all depends on how you use it. My boat is a little smaller and weighs less, but I went through about 30 gallons in just over 45 minutes once last year. That is at full speed across a lake for almost the whole 45 minutes. That is $100 an hour. IF you really run at full speed a lot, they will chug gas. I think the actual figure on the 787 in the 16 ft speedster is each engine uses 13 gallons per hour at WOT. Expect the challenger to be about the same, maybe a bit higher. But I have also had days where I played all day and only used a half tank.

Dang, that is ridiculous. I never knew they would suck gas like that.

Yeah it can suck it down and cost a fortune if you drive like you stole it....I dont do that very often or I would be broke.

I can run through a tank of fuel in about 3 to 5 hours run full throttle all the time. I do believe mine has a 40 gallon tank on it and it does get a little expensive doing that everyday but it is worth it

How often are you running through your oil in your oil tank?

Mmmmm....how many times do you fill up your oil tank versus your gas tank? I am trying to go premix but if I have to put in a gallon of oil EVERY tank of gas it will be much more expensive to go premix.

Agree 100% I do to ... and love it ... I've got a better sporting performance boat than friends that have $40+ K in theirs .... I've got $9K into my boat all in!!

You do not want to go premix with twin engines trust me! Leaving the oil injection is better for the engine, enviroment and your wallet!!

AS far as oil usage, it has a 40 gallon gas tank and mixes 40:1. So everytime you fill the tank, it needs a new gallon basically. I find this to be pretty accurate. So for all those time you go through $100 worth of gas in 2 hours, dont forget another $40 in oil. Basically add $1.00 to the cost of every gallon you burn. Gets expensive really quick. That is the 1 downside to the 2 strokes and twin motors.

No that is WITH the oil pump. If they fill up once a season, they arent using the boat. I went through 3 gallons in 4 days last year.

With what you said here, this is what you would do if you use the premix. I was under the impression that folks that used the oil pump actually used less oil overall.

On a side note, I have a dealer locally that sells for around $29/ga. Also I found it on Amazon.com for $31 shipped to my door.

Im not telling you what it should do, i am telling you how it ACTUALLY works. This is hands on knowledge from my own boat. It does use a little less, but its not a huge difference. Nothing like saying it uses like half as much. The pump is suppose to mix it at the same 40:1. Still plan on adding a gallon of oil with every tank of gas. If someone tells you they only fill it once a season, they either arent using the boat much or their pump isnt working properly.

The main reason I wasn't going to use the block off plates is the claim that the plugs foul easily when using the premix method.
