1997 Bomb GTI-will turn over but wont start!

I have had a 97 Bombadier GTI for one week. It came from Florida to Michigan. It ran fine the first night for about 2 hours. The second day we did put it in the launch without screwing the plugs in. We did not start it and pulled it out and drained it right away.It seemed to run fine again all day but late in the day it wanted to stall out when it was running idle or in going slow in the no wake zone. I went to put it in the water a few days later and it would turn over but it would not start. The oil light would beep and light up. We have cleaned and replaced the spark plugs and it will get a spark but it still wont start. I am starting to think I made a mistake! I am afraid because I don't know much -that I will be taken for a ride when I go in to get it fixed. Any idea what could be wrong so the mechanic doesn"t think I am completely stupid and fix things that do not need to be just to jack my bill? Any help is appreciated!

probably fuel issue? does it start with starter fluid?

Pull the spark plugs and crank it to see if any water is in the cylinders.
