Been having issues with the 1996 XP and decided to troubleshoot as it was doing strange things. Seemed to start only when I let go of the start button. It also gave me some sputtering for a few minutes the other day then cleared up Ski is restored so I've done pretty much everything Here is the skinny. Battery voltage drop at the terminals goes from 12.7 to 11.6 when cranking. I get a dim light on my spark plug tester. When I let go of the starter button and the ski starts the spark plugs tester glow is noticeably brighter. I pulled the starter and rebuilt it but the starter never had an issue. Spun the engine very well. This did not resolve anything.
I connected an additional battery using jumper cables and still only dim glow on the plug wires and no start. I'm thinking it is the coil but I'll verify the battery is good tomorrow. When the ski does start I'm getting a voltage increase so I figure the rectifier and charging system is working to some extent. Strange strange to me.
How much battery voltage drop is acceptable?
