i just purchased a 1996 seadoo gts . it has a prototype r&d sticker on it. the hull design is a 2001. the title is 1996. just wondering as to if anyone has seen these before? i never have. it runs like a champ . it has a 587 in it but it has a lot of get up and go. i traded a 1991 yamaha wr500 wave runner and 600 for it. just wondering as to if these were a common thing and if i may be looking at something being problematic because of it being a prototype? thank you for any and all help.

I think the problem might be you not verifying the VIN on the title with the VIN on the boat. R&D is a company that makes aftermarket parts and it suggests that maybe the previous owner put a different intake grate on it. Pics will tell the story quick but at least your now riding a great running Seadoo.

i just checked the vin plates it says 1996 on it and the vin plates all match . the protoype sticker says for "show and demostration purposes" "bombardier corp" the 587 is quite peppy it only has one carb. starts right up and it flys.

What makes you say it has a 587 engine? Please post the VIN.

Well I'm not sure what the sticker implies then, it does sound kinda special. It's a great looking ski. I think you just have one of the first models of a since proven/long running hull design.

thats what drew me to it. i think i did quite well on what i did. was wondering about 587 motor . i have found websites that say they put 587 single carbs in them. it scoots

Please post the VIN and the engine numbers from the front of the engine.

Unless the vin has been swapped you have a unique ski. The 96 gts came with a single carb 587. But normally it would have been the old hull design until 2001. Seadoo has not offered a ski with that hull design with a 587. The first gts with that hull came with a 717.

If it was made in 1996 in then how can it have a hull design of 2001 ....5 yrs later????

Look on top of the PTO, there should be a metal tag with the engine size on it. According to seadoosource.com a 96 GTS had the 587 motor rated at 60 HP.

That hull was in production for the GTX already in 96. BRP just continued to use the old hull for the GTS model until 2001.

well reguardless of what it is. i feel that the prototype tag makes it unique. and it rides awesome. i just hope that getting parts will not be hard

It not unique.
Its just stolen.

Anybody who is familiar with seadoos will know that is NOT a 1996 ski.

I hope you didn't spend top dollar.

Edit:

Looking at picture I saw that ski months back.
Was listed cheap bc it wasn't running. Someone bought it took trailer and raised it ~200 bucks.
Was a scam then and is a scam now.

This is the second thread on swapped vin's

you can call seadoo and ask? it sounds pretty cool, and glad it runs well, the thing that makes me curious is that it is the same exact colors as the 2001. Even if they used the body design from the gtx 5 years later, since they change colors every year, I am surprised that their 2001 model would have the same colors they decided to do research on 5 years earlier.

Good point. Did Seadoo know what color the 2001 would be 5 years prior? It seems strange that it has a 587 engine. Something is fishy. Does this ski have DESS?

Does it really matter....
he bought it, has a title, it runs great and he loves it.

Maybe someone did switched hulls (stolen or not), but now it's titled that way. If you ever pull the gas tank out look for another vin tag and see if it matches the other one. If it was stolen can something happen to it now?????????

How many of these R&D skis did BRP make that year? Is it similar to the RXX with a tuned pipe that gets 50 more HP than the regular 951?

i also hope you enjoy the ski but something REALLY seems wrong with the whole situation.
