I have a 1996 Challenger. I am starting to really get pissed with this boat.

When I get in the water for the first couple of mins the boat runs amazing. I plane and hit 45 50mph reving at 6900rpm. 2 mins later the boat starts stutering and I have to let off the throttle and it wont even go past 15mph. It feels like it is starving for gas. Then the rpms fluxtuate and bogs. If I shut the boat off for a few mins and then start it back up, it runs the balls for about 1 min.

Its not bad gas. Its not the plugs or the fuel filter. I put 93 octane in all the time,.,. I know it is not nessesary but I dont think it hurts.

I dont think it is the carbs either because it drives fine for a few mins

I am thinking electrical, either ignition box warms up and gives weak spark or maybe the fuel pump..

I really have no Idea. It did it all last summer.. I will not put up with it this summer If I have to I will sell it. I really dont want to because I like it.

Please help!!

dude, on trhe "SAFE" side, clean the carbs out. Only about 1-1/2hr job.
If you think its not that, then disconnect the red wire from rectifier, if bog goes away, then replace it, but still gothru the fuel system..inline filter, lines, CARBS...

Sounds like what my XP is doing. Mine runs fine for a while on a full tank, but if i let it get below 3/4 and start to jump waves and splash around the fuel, it will suck up air from somewhere and do what you describe. I can restart it and hobble home, and sometimes it will wake back up for a couple minutes, or until I hit more waves, then bogs and stalls out.

I am thinking it is a air leak into my fuel system somewhere, possibly the baffle. But I haven't had time to work on it to find the culprit for sure.

Timmy, what is the red wire on the rectifier and what does it do?

symptom of bad rectifier...

quote....

The rectifier/regulator box does two things. It recieves AC voltage generated by the stator coils through the yellow wires. It then converts that AC power to DC power using the rectifier portion. The red wire sends back to the battery, regulated DC voltage to keep your battery charged while riding the ski.
When the rectifier quits working, that red wire is sending AC voltage to the DC battery. Your ignition runs off DC power as it is a DC CDI ignition. When AC is sent, it interferes with the DC CDI. If you can picture the static your car radio has when under high power lines you can understand how the AC effects the ignition.

A magneto produces very little voltage at lower rpm and more voltage at higher rpm. That is why the motor will start and run decent at lower rpm, but run very ragged at higher rpm when the rectifier is shot.

Could the megneto be cutting out at high rpms once it heats up? I can cruise at quarter throttle with no problems.

Your right the jet could also be clogged I think I am going to clean them.. Any specific way or are there any kits? instructions?

I had the exact same problem the other day when suddenly I was not able to go past 15mph anymore. I thought there was air/water in the line...

I'm also having problem with my spark plugs getting fouled very quickly.

I don't know if it's related.

Can it be an ignition problem? (3A fuse for the boat lights keep on breaking...don't know if it have anything to do with that...)

I checked the carbs and they are super clean (they must have been rebuilt right before I bought the boat 2 months ago)
