I have a 1996 GTX with a strange acting safety lanyard. I have been investigating how the system works and understand the ski computer is programmed to a chip in the lanyard key. The issue is when I put the key on the post I have to press and move it around to get the ski to start, so it seems to be a contact issue. Once started works fine but it worries me that i might get stuck on the lake if it quits completely. Is this the switch post or the lanyard? Do I need a new post and lanyard? Do I install the post and take the ski and lanyard to a dealer to be programmed?

the end of the lanyard, has a magnet, which when you plug it on, it pulls up on contact inside of post, if you have a spare lanyard, try it, and yes, it does need to be programmed to your ski, and (aftermarket seadoo/jetski shop) usually has the equipment, my buddy has a shop and charges 40.00 for a lanyard and programs it free -- also try and clean post and lanyard, with like a pencil eraser -- i have a spare key, but the old key in comparison, is weaker (the magnet) -- your key should be able to pick up say, a, 6 in stanley screwdriver, where my new key, can probably pick up 2 of em -- http://www.shopsbt.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=s&Screen=SRCH&Search=lanyard&I1.x=16&I1.y=7

the MPEM contains the programming that matches the chip in the lanyard. the post only acts as a magnetic switch and there is nothing unique about it meaning you can swap posts between machines without programming.

make sure you lanyard and post are both clean first. if they are clean and you've tried other lanyards(they don't have to be the correct one, any DESS lanyard will activate the switch in the post, you'll just get a single long beep) and it still is not working very well. then replace the post.
