Hmmmm... As I type this I am thinking of something new. Anyway... neighbor has a 1996 GTI. I looked at it for her and the carb was leaking, had aftermarket parts etc. Carb settings were 3 turns out on the high speed adjuster, 3 turns out on the low speed. I figured the leak and parts were responsible. Took it to the water today and it just wouldn't go. Pulled the choke and it got better. Came back and added fuel on both adjusters., came back added fuel again and again. Pulling the choke while bogging I did get it to take off and run good a few times. I came home and looked at the system and didn't find anything amiss. I set the carbs and gave it some extra fuel 1.5 out on the low speed. .5 on the high. Bogged again on start up.

As I type this... I am thinking....... bad crank seals. Thoughts???

How difficult is it to test the seals? It seems you need to pull the exhaust manifold and carbs, plug the oil pump line to do the test. I doubt the exhaust gasket will cooperate so you can't just slide a gasket in there to seal it. :) What is a good neighbor price to do this job??

So did you rebuild the carbs with new Mikuni parts?

Pulling the choke means it's running lean. I would replace the on/off valve, fuel strainer and any gray fuel hoses.
The carb settings should stay stock.

It is unlikely the crank seals are leaking. Typically if the outer ones are it will runaway and if the inner ones are it will flood with oil.

I plan to bring it to da bayou one more time. I have checked the carb and made some parts changes, set the pop-off, made sure all the holes were open and it was clean. I pressure tested the fuel lines all they way to the tank, fuel filter checked tank vent good.
