1996 gsx, starter keeps pulling out?

just rebuilt my sea doo,

starter works for a second or two when i try to start it, then it disengages from the motor (but it still spins). it keeps doing this and im unable to keep it enganged enough to start it. any thoughts? anything i can check or just need a new starter?

Make sure the battery is good, not just charged. It has to deliver enough consistent power to keep the starter engaged. Is the starter OEM? Might need new brushes.
