So, last week I was running my ski and I started hearing a bad grinding noise and the ski started capping out at 5000rpms. I pulled the ski and pulled put the pump cause thats where the noise was coming from and the wear ring was scratched and full of grooves looked very bad. I ordered a new one installed it and just put in back in. The first run it was fine then after about two hours pf running it everything came back the rpm drop and grinding noise. I have no idea what it could possibly be thoughts?

Have you looked at the bearings in the pump housing? What did the oil in the cone look like? The other possibility is that it’s out of alignment.

When I pulled the pump I checked the bearings(they looked to be in good condition) and changed the oil and put Klotz in. How would I go about checking the alignment?

My thoughts.....if the alignment is serious off, getting the pump back on would be a bear I would think....with that said....could the motor mounts be going south allowing the engine to move slightly and forcing the impeller to scrape the wear ring???? IDK...just thinking about possibilities....the impeller to wear ring clearances are pretty small so any movement / flex would close the gap fairly easily.....

Okay would you just recommend I take it to a professional to get it all checked out?
That is your call.....taking it to a dealer will cost some money and the ski would be out of service for an indeterminate amount of time.....only you can decide how much time and money are worth investing into a 1996 machine......Personally....my older machine ('96) is a continuous work in progress that only I tinker with, as I have 2 newer skis that work reliably for the time being! I expect nothing from the ski so if it's out of commission for any amount of time...no harm, no foul for me.
