1995 Sportster.. can it make more power

Hi I'm new to the jet boat scene so maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have a single engine '95 Sportster. Aside from the impeller are there any engine mods that can be done to this one (657 rotax I believe). I picked up the boat for 400 dollars so i have some money left to put in it. I have already done basic maintenance( all filters fuel/oil lines, rebuilt carbs, new plugs, etc.) and it runs like a champ. I have a ski boat already so I just want to run this lil sucker to the ragged edge any help is much appreciated.

the list is endless on what you can do, depends on how much you want to spend. Impeller, hp exhaust pipe and aftermarket flame arrestors will give you a good little jump. with out putting too much more strain. Have to remember that motor is already working pretty hard....400 boat can turn into a 2000 boat pretty quick lol

Where can I find the flame arrester and exhaust? I cant seem to fin d anything for the 657. My local supply shop is no help. Thanks in advance.

Also remember you will have to tinker with the carbs if you change the arrestors

but if your not in a huge rush just keep searching ebay,craigslist,here ....closer to the end of the season the more and more parts start popping up. As for your dealer, the 657 and 657x are almost extinct from BRP's perspective. If I were you I would grab a 717 and build a nice little powerhouse, it will replace your 657 with little probs and its easier to get parts for. A 717 with a 657 ignition is a great starting point

Where would one look to get a 717? Believe I also have the 657 in my 95 sportster, and am having problems with it dying. If I can justify a new engine to my wife that'd be cool. She knows I'm not too enthusiastic about having to rebuild it this winter.

The amount of money you'd have to put into all the changes you'd need for an extra 4 MPH just doesn't seem to justify the additional costs. You'd have to practically rip everything out and do a complete rebuild with all the 717's electricals. You'd have to do engine mounts too.........

657 = 80hp

717 = 85hp

If you go w/ flame arrestors and pipe/exhaust, you'll need to "lower" the pop-off in the carb...resort to probably the 2.0n/s along with the 'back" spring. Should put you in ballpark, plug a few extra jets...start fat.

I understood the horsepower ratings and that was it lol. I'll just go with rebuilding the engine, just waiting for $300 to accumulate and then I can have my cylinders honed and oversized, and get new pistons and everything I need. Don't need the extra speed, wife thinks the boat goes too fast now anyways, and it's hard to get it on the lake by myself, she likes to tag along

I feel your pain..... I got one of those now too. Seems I can't find a hiding spot in my house, it always finds me........:ack:

I remembering someone getting an aftermarket impeller for the same year/model boat as you, and it made a world of difference.
