I have already removed starter and determined it is not my problem, Bendix seems to be the real problem, going to remove rear engine cover today to gain access, anybody out there have any ideas what generally fails on the Bendix?

bendix is very reliable especially on the 4tec, have only ever seen 1 or 2 with a bendix problem, normally it is something else like sc bearing failure, timing chain failure, valve issue, etc. removing the bendix is a pain so I would make sure that is your problem, you have to remove the pump, driveshaft, sc, pto housing, flywheel, just to get to it.

what exactly is your ski doing?

When starter was still installed would turn approx. 3 revolutions then just spin until I stopped and tried again to start, the same thing 3 revolutions and just spin. This ski is bit of a restoration project so anything is possible. We can rule out battery as is new and voltage checked but I am open for trying anything as opposed to removing Bendix, ordered new starter will probably wait and install it and see if problem still exist before going through trouble described by ski-d00.

bendix spin out does happen with some 4tecs but normally the engine should start before it spins out. how many seconds of cranking do you get before it spins out? if you hold the throttle full open and crank over, does it still spin out(it won't ever start with the throttle wide open, no spark and no fuel). if so, how many seconds?

it's very possible that it is some other starting issue and the spin out is present do to other non-start issue. spin out is sometimes caused from the engine getting one or two firing from cyls and speeding the flywheel faster than the bendix speed and kicking the gear out but then the engine doesn't start and the starter keeps spinning but now at a faster rate due to no load.
